Neglected boats

If not allowed, delete please. It is winterizing season. I am on the water 8 hours a day right now. I thought I would show the neglected sailboats I come across. I will identity them to the best of my ability. Here are 2 from today to get this started. I will add more over the next few weeks.

The first 2 boats are a Catalina 25 and an o'day 20. Neither have moved in years...

Neglected and abandoned boats are the bane of almost every boat yard. Fiberglass boats just don't have the decency of wood boats to rot away into the ground.

If the owners of these boats are still paying the yard fees they may be neglected but not abandoned. Once they stop paying their yard fees the marina can take ownership and sell them, give them away, or make them landfill. Rhode Island is piloting a recycling program and the waste from building composite airplanes is prompting the aerospace industry to look at recycling options. In the meantime we see these poor boats. :(

Neglected and abandoned boats are two different things. In both counts those boats pictured seem to be tied up to private docks. While they may not be kept at the time to your personal standards there is no evidence that the boats are neglected and certainly not abandoned. We don't know the circumstances on why the owners may not have been able to use them regularly. In the absence of code restrictions I consider posting pictures of private property with intent to shame are unacceptable and like you have anticipated they should be taken down.

I suspect SailingLoto is just trying to start an interesting conversation based on thoughts he has been having whenever he passes these neglected beauties on the water.

I would note that in both cases, there is a well maintained powerboat at the same dock. The first is a jetski that, apparently, is important enough to get a nice clean cover, the second has got to be way too expensive to allow any dirt to settle on it, also with a cover.

What values and circumstances the owners have aside, it is sad to see a perfectly beautiful sailboat in such a state. Maybe I'll post a picture of one of the saddest sights I have ever seen. She is right in my own driveway :wahwah:. Then again, maybe it's better if I don't .

I'm not intending to shame anyone. I find it interesting that people allow this to happen. I see this with powerboats too, but this is a sailing forum.

I always wonder the story for why they set neglected. Did they get to old to sail? were the grandkids not interested?

Some boats I leave notes to see if they are looking to sell them or have them hauled away.

I onced belonged to a marina where the owner was in his late 80's and struggling to keep the dream alive... I was there because the rate was really low and all I really wanted was a cleat to tie to and a place to park my truck. Anyway, about 2 out of every 3 boats at this marina were in very sad shape. Some had water sitting in them, a few sank from time to time and had to be refloated. If you talk to the few people who continued to use the marina, you would hear of regahatas and such from the past... most of the boats were not abandoned but the owners had aged out and could not let go of the idea of going sailing one day.

If not but by the grace of God.....

@Crazy Dave Condon knows the marina I'm talking about.:(

Posting pictures or otherwise identifying would be considered “shaming” IMHO.

Lots of people live in neighbourhoods where someone on the street doesn’t take care of their property. If you got sick and couldn’t cut the lawn and someone posted about you how would that make you feel???

By all means have the conversation about neglected, abandoned etc.but I don’t see the value of posting more photos.

I had no idea you all would find this post offensive. I look at these boats as projects. There is some beauty and grace in the decay of the ones that cannot be saved. It makes me wonder why they got that way and if the owner's would want them saved.

If you do find a boat that you can get, make sure you get an official bill of sale. It can be quite a long and difficult project to register a boat without one. Also, make absolutely sure there are no outstanding debts against the boat, as you will become liable for them once it is in your name.

i truly thought more of you would enjoy this post, not by mocking the owners or me for posting it.

solid advice. I end up with a cheap or free boat on occassion, and am thorough about paperwork. My state is stickler on it anymore. a lot of people are lackadaisical about it and end up with penalties and boats they can't register. always dot your t's and cross your I's.

Not really ....................

@SailingLoto presents an interesting observation in how many people treat expensive boats. I really don't believe there is such a thing as an inexpensive boat.

I would note that in both cases, there is a well maintained powerboat at the same dock. The first is a jetski that, apparently, is important enough to get a nice clean cover, the second has got to be way too expensive to allow any dirt to settle on it, also with a cover.
I have been in my present marina for 20 years. Every year I see an influx of brand new, out of the box, power and sail boats, begin their journey towards becoming desolate wrecks. Usually at the end of 10 years they're starting to look pretty rough and they're sold off. The most common are large power boats over 40'. They have rarely been washed, NEVER been waxed, and I'd hate to see what shape the engines are in. By the smoke alone, I can guess. And, the expensive covers are in tatters.

Me ? I have a little 31 footer (actually quite big back in its day) and I take care of it from stem to stern, inside and out. Why ? Because I love boats and I love boating. I will sell her for next to nothing, (to the right boat lover, dumbasses need not apply) when I can no longer maintain her as it would break my heart to see her deteriorate. She's served me well and I will do my best to take care of her to the end. If possible, I will keep an eye on her as we both continue to age. Maybe even a clause in the sales contract for one ride per year.

As far as shaming goes .................. how can you shame someone when none of us have a clue as to who owns it and in what state/province ? These boats are the essence of anonymity.

It is to cast stones of shame at the shameless boat owners who ugly up the boating world with their shamelessness. Shame on them!
If you have two shames together does it work out to a compliment ? Sort of like a double negative in English composition ?

Well let’s see. @SailingLoto indicates they are in/near Lake of Ozarks, so we have a pretty good idea of where the photos might have been taken.
The photos look like they are people’s private docks at their HOME ie NOT a marina where you wouldn’t necessarily know where a boat was from.

How many members of SBO sail on Lake of the Ozarks and might recognize the boats? Maybe one of the members is the owner of one of the boats that get posted and might feel “shamed” so I don’t “know” that the photos are really anonymous.

The pictures don’t really lend anything to a discussion about why, how anyway.

Just because you CAN do something doesn’t mean you SHOULD.

That was my thought.... If I mentioned owners, boat names or locations, it would be totally different.

Regardless of you feelings, here is another. I believe a 27 Catalina.

@Hunter216 you go the Lake of the Ozarks right. I have only found one member on here from the area. If I take a picture of their boat and they take offense, I am sincerely apologize.

I'm not shaming anyone. I kindly ask that if you do not like the subject matter of this post that you move on.

I started this thread to simply share these neglected beauties, thinking someone else may have interest in it as well. No negativity expressed or implied. I am not saying "Look what this lazy SOB did!" I am not mocking or shaming them. If I do show your boat, by all means let me know.
