I am in the process of refurbishing my 1980 Hunter 30. One of the projects upcoming is the replacement of the halyards (both mailsail and jib are original equipment). Does anyone know of a good web site that I could order these from with the slicing already completed? Appreciate the help.

What I used.

Not sure of your size, I used three from SailNet in the 7/16" size. I replaced my main halyard. I added a spinnaker halyard and a spare. I use the spare as the topping lift adjustment on my H37C. See Related Link. I did not cut my old halyard. I used it to pull a messenger line through. Then the messenger line to pull the new halyard back up and through. Sew and tape or use Steve Dion's paperclip method. :)

Many sources.

Mike: There are many sources available. Just get your prices on the line. You can either get them prespliced or cut to order and they will splice on your old shackles or you can purchase new ones. You usually end up with halyards that are too long when you puchase them prespliced. They charge about $15-20 for each splice. www.pyacht.com www.sailnet.com www.westmarine.com just a couple of options.

And then...

be sure to square up the bitter ends and sew them together with fishing line in a crisscross design to give them flexibility as they go over the sheeves. Do not use duct tape.

Halyard

Mike, this has nothing to do with halyards, but I was wondering if your boat was out of the water , if you could check the bottom bushing on the rudder to see what the outside diameter is and also the skag if it has bolts on the outside so that it can be dropped down. I need to replace mune as it is missing and Hunter has no idea of size> (THANKS)I replaced both my jib and main halyards and had them prespliced (West Marine can do) I used the paperclip method to tie the old to new and run back through the roller

A local Rigger

They may be a vanishing breed, but I have all of my line work done by a rigger in the area. He will match anyone's prices (to get his margin on the line) has a good selection of line in stock, and I learn something every time I stop in to see him. O yeah, he let me pick through his "spare locker" of items taken off of other boats for all of the hardware I needed to set up for single handing. Just another alternative. David Lady Lillie
