Doe's anyone know how the strut is connected to the hull of a 302? I have to remove the bearing and the yard i am at does not have a 1 inch puller so i thought if i remove the strut i could bring it to a machine shop and use their press. Thanks, Dennis

The slotted machine screws for the strut went into nuts that were glassed into the hull,I used an impact screwdriver to brake free the screws and one of them stripped the head and I had to drill that one out and send a new bolt and nut thru the hull what a pain in the A that was. If you remove it ya gotta make sure it goes back in the same place and angle as you took it out cause mine had washer shims that aligned the strut with the shaft. do a search on cutlass bearing and you might come up with another way to deal with it or use sockets and threaded rod and make your own press

What I did

Hi Dennis, I used a hacksaw to cut the cutlass bearing into 3 pieces (maybe 4) and then the bearing was easy to remove. Used about 1/2" threaded rod with washers / nuts to press in the new cutlass bearing. The threaded rod needs to be about 3x the length of the bearing to pass through the assembly (cutlass bearing + strut) Would not remove the strut. Good luck, Bob

Don't !!!

Dennis - It's easier, cheaper & faster to make a puller to remove the cutlass bearing than it would be to remove, replace & re-allign the strut. As per the previous posts, I don't recommend trying to remove the strut to change the bearing.
