I'm about to pop the top on the fresh water tank in my H28.5. As long as I'll be resealing it for a leak, I figured I should probably do just about everything I can do while the tank is open. The 28.5 has a tank beneath the V-berth, sealed with a glassed wood cover, or something like it.

Any suggestions or recommendations for additional checks and upkeep while its open would be appreciated, along with sealant material and procedure advice from anyone who has been crazy or bored enough to take this job on. This leak has had me sailing with little or no fresh water for too long, mostly because it bothers me less than a wet V. Unfortunately its a very small leak, but bleeds like crazy the closer to full the tank is.

Thanks

Jeff

To boldly go...

...well, you know the rest. Please take pictures and post them here and the twentyeightfive site, 'cuz you may be the first to pop the top, or at least make the attempt, and I'd love to know how the disassembly goes, how the innerds looks and how the reassembly goes. Good luck.

A mess

I have done this project and I would be suprised if you can get the lid off in one piece. I think they used 5200 which is an adhesive that won't quit. I ended up replacing the top with one out of white plexiglass. I would try and fix the leak again if possible without removing the top. If you want to clean the inside of the tank, try using one of those round screw in hatches that cost about $15.00. If you really want to seal the top, try running a layer of fiberglass over the seam around the perimeter. Good luck and let us know how it works out. I am keping my fingers crossed when it comes to the holdng tank which was sealed the same way no doubt. My fuel tank is also integral, unlike some later models.
