My 8HP Tohatsu was badly damaged in a storm and must be replaced. I need any and all suggestions about the best and especially *quietest* motor. Thanks - paul (s.v. Selah)
PAUL, IF YOU WANT QUIET GO FOR AN ELECTRIC MOTOR NOTHING IS QUIETER, AND NOTHING IS MORE EXPENSIVE ABOUT 4 GRAND!! I HAVE A SUZUKI 9.9 AND IT IS GREAT. I'D GIVE IT A STRONG BUY RECOMMENDATION, BUT CHECK THE FORUM ENTITLED 'STIFFED BY SUZUKI' BY SAM MORGAN FIRST. FAIR WINDS AND REGARDS DAN S/V STARDUST
Paul,I have a Honda 5hp 4 stroke for my hunter 22 and love it. It is a basic model, no electric start or anything like that, but it starts on the first pull pretty much every time. Its also a very quiet motor. If I move up to a larger boat I will definitely look into getting a Honda, two thumbs up.Shawn
I guess most motors are similar but you would know a four stroke is very quite and better for the enviroment. But one important concideration we made for our 260 was that we did not want to hang over the back to start it nor to lift it.So we fitted a Yamaha 8HP 4 stroke with electric start and power tilt. We fitted a home made steering linkage to the rudder post(if I can only get to post a diagram I will). The 8Hp is more than adequate. The motor also features reverse thrust. We paid about $2500 Aus. We have been extememly happy with how quite, fuel efficient and easy to use it is.
My 260 came with a 8 hp motor which moves it along fine if you have plenty of time to accelerate/deccelerate. It is when you start to get in trouble (usually in a tight marina) that you really want a much larger motor. The extra manuverability to overcome the occasional windshift right as you are docking or running it up on the trailer will more than justify the few extra $'s. Several of the 15 hp motors are based off of their 10 hp brothers so there is no weight penalty. I like the power tilt idea but have only gotten the glazed-over eye look when asking various distributors for this feature.Check the archive for lots of previous discussions on this topic. This is a really nice boat so set yourself up right and enjoy!
when at anchor as he forgot to turn it off. I realized a few minutes after boarding from the swimming ladder that water was streaming out of the test hole. Its almost as quiet at half throttle. My Johnson roars. alan
Paul:I think that the Yamaha 4 stroke & Honda are probably the best 4 strokes made. There are some advantages with the Yamaha because of the exhaust system. There are Hondas running around that are well over 20 years old. Then the Tohatsu/Nissan 4 stroke and then the rest of them. Tohatsu is probably making many of the others on the market including some of the Mercurys (from what I understand).Just remember that you are going to be dealing with some extra weight if you are dealing with a 2 stroke now. The trade off is quiter operations, less fuel and MORE $$$.
I have a yamaha 9.9 high thrust long shaft on my 1996 hunter 26 since new very easy on gas plenty of power plus 13 amp altenator I have used this motor on the great lakes and in the florida keys they are quiet and just plain great
