I plan on mooring my new hunter 170 this summer on the east side (subject to prevailing west wind) of a ny state finger lake. Any suggestions on successful mooring methods would be appreciated.

Mooring a 170

I'm on the East side of Kueka Lake and wanted to moor my 170 at a light weight, winter pull out dock, but was afraid the wave action would pound the boat into the dock, or move the dock. Overton's http://www.overtons.com/ has a Safe Harbor Marine Mooring Arms device. I installed it last year and it worked beautifully all season. Its hard to describe, but basically its a stand-off device that absorbs all the wave energy and keeps the 170 away from the dock, with no damage to boat or dock. The bigger problem I had was leaving from and returning to 25ft wide space between my and the neighbor's dock in Force zero winds. Haven't solved that one yet; just use the motor and back in. Love to hear what you think of the 170. If you are interested in more info, drop me a line at BudH9@aol.com

Fenderless 170 docking

Not really in response to the original posting, but in response to the first response: I have docked my 170 for 3 years w/o fenders, and my prior boat of similar size for 12 years before then. I've posted a drawing on the "Photo Forum", in case you'd like to see. As far as handling the 170, I have added a football-sized HobieCat mast float to the top of the mast and had a reef point added to the main. I turned over last summer and turtled. The boat was impossible to right (not worth repeating!). I am trying to get a new, more weighted centerboard made for me. My boat was a very early model. The later models, I hear, have some added weight in the centerboard. For single handed sailing, it's a tippy boat!
