Water is leaking into the rudder from somewhere near the rudder post. The inside of the rudder has been repaired by previous owners several times and now it is soft inside with internal water causing blisters on the starboard side of the rudder. Has anyone had a similar problem? Does anyone know of a rudder manufacture that is still in business that deals with Cal 28'es? Any input appreciated.

Rudder for Cal 28

Try Foss Foam. They have facilities in Florida and California, with molds for dozens of boats. I had a new elliptical rudder custom made by them as a group purchase, but I'm sure they'll have what you need without having to have a new mold fabricated. Good luck! Rudder needs repair -- or should I replace?

I too am looking at either a repair of a rudder that is in decent shape but showing signs of water leakage inside -- or just replacing the 16 year old original rudder with a new one. Repair is roughly estimated at $1,000 to $2,500 (that's rough, but it's still in the water today) and a new rudder seems to be close to $2,000.

chances are good for that vintage that i was made by Foss Foam is Florida. They're on the web and may still be ableo to replace it.

Same boat, different waters-----

My 87 Cal needs a new rudder too.....seems that prior to 1990 rudders were laminated with resin bead on the edges to prevent water from seeping into the innards of the rudder. Seems well intentioned folks at boat yards, marinas and do-it-ourselfers sanded down those beaded seams and created the water avenues that have caused us to all need to replace the original rudders. With your rudder post sent to Foss Foam, the cost of replacement is less than $1000. Hope this helps some.... Frank
