I am a new owner of a H23. Am currently looking for an outboard. Wondering if the group has an opinion on the yamaha 8 hp 4 stroke long shaft high thrust motor.Outboard on a 10 foot zodiac has become available in my area. Motor is 2002 model with electric tilt not working. Zodiac is an older model. Seller is asking $2000. Comes with electric start and alternator. Can engine be tilted manually? Is this a good price? Do these engines also have a pull start? This is my first boat and would appreciate any input. I am going to look at the outboard this morning. Anything in particular I should inspect prior to making an offer. Thanks Alex

not sure about your engine's performance but my 8HP is plenty to move the 23.

Good motor, I had one

I had a 8hp yamaha high thrust 2000 model. It was a great motor. It was on a Mac 26c and did a great job. Plenty of power when you needed it. I sold the boat last summer and got a Hunter 260. It has a Merc. 9.9 4 stroke. I like the yamaha better.

I own a 2002 Yamaha

Used it on an O'Day 222. Excsllent, trouble free, motor with plenty of power. Electric start was flawless. Think it has a 6 amp alternator. Mine does have a manual tilt, and manual 3 position trim adjustment. I like the outboard so much that I will be using it this season on a H26 I recently purchased.

Thanks for the info

Thanks for all the prompt input. This forum has been GREAT! You all have been extremely helpful for a truly "green" H23 owner. Happy Holidays Alex

Good engine

I have an 2002 9.9 Yamaha high thrust. Geared to push! My 9.9 Pushed my 30' 10,000 pound boat to hull speed at 1/3 power. Like 8 more because it has fresh water flush connection and tilt. But thought I needed all the power I could to push my boat. They don't have external pull start to try to prevent someone from starting with out battery hooked up which will damage it. My 9.9 cost new $2600 with tax. If you can do compression test on it.Or maybe price new 8 you know what your getting.

Transporting Ymaha 8hp 4 stroke

Just bought this 2003 yamaha 8hp long shaft high trust 4 stroke electric start with a 2003 10 ft zodiac for $1700. Both appear in great condition. Think I got a pretty good deal. I do have a question concerning transporting the outboard. There have be multiple posts advising not trailerling the motor on the H23 motor mount. Apparently, the motor should not be laid down on either side for trasport. How have you all dealt with this issue. I suppose I could build a rack which allow the outboard to travel nearly in the upright position in my SUV. Getting ever so closer to getting thesailboat in the water. Thanks Alex H23

We fitted the Yamaha 8hp 4 stroke to our 260. Power tilt, electric start, remote steering likage to rudder, remote controll for geabox and power. Absolutely brilliant Hey everyone starts sometime. Get her into the water and enjoy!

Transporting outboard

Not sure about bracket, but if I remember correctly if you take it off of boat the owners manual says you should not lay on side with carb, because of the oil in engine can get into carb.
