My main halyard got jammed around itself on the winch that I had to cut it in order to bring down the mainsail (can you tell I am a novice sailor?). Need new main halyard, Catalina 22. Its current one was attached to a steel line with a bowline. Question: what length halyard? size, strength? Lines lead aft to cockpit. While I'm at it, how long does a replacement jib sheet need to be? Size and strength? (Original jib, I think it's the 110? Im not racing; this is for pure cruising.

John Try them. Also check out the Catalina 22 Association website for a manual of your boat with all that good information. Stu

The wire is about twenty to twenty-five feet. So for line leading aft to the cockpit, you will need about thirty-five feet, twenty-five feet for the mast when the main is lowered and then about ten feet for going back to the cockpit. Play it safe and get forty feet. I think for your purposes, 5/16 double braided polyester is fine. You may find parallel core, like in New England Sta-Set, has less stretch, but it may not hold a knot onto the wire eye as well as a braided core. For myself, I use Yale wire rope that is 1/8 wire spliced into 3/8 inch Yale double braided polyester. This arrangement provides a smooth transition from rope to wire that easily passes the mast steaming light unlike the knot in the wire eye.

Thanks, Bayard

Thanks for your help, Bayard. I was about to go and buy about 70 ft of halyard. Thanks for all the replies.
