I was informed that in the beginning of next year I will be moving up into the DC metro area. I cannot drive all the way back to Norfolk for my boat. So I have to find a new home for my boat. Doghouse, could you narrow it down just a little.
Baltimore is considered to be within the Washington metro area. Look at the charts and maps there is the entire tidal Potomac River and the Patuxent River in that stretch.

If you want to avoid the crowds and prices of annapolis...check out the marinas in solomons island...still handy to DC and minutes from the Bay.

Be aware of tax issues if...........
you move your boat into Maryland!!! I believe they'll hit you for 5% of the value of your boat - and they get to pick the value! If you plan to keep your boat in Va., make sure to check out the Personal Property tax rates in the jurisdictions you're considering. I live in the DC burbs and keep my boat in Norfolk (until retirement). The savings in taxes is worth the weekend commutes for a couple years. JMHO Dave S/V Pas de Deux Catana 471-44

Depending on what you want, location etc. And how you use your boat - day sails, longer trips, etc. email me offline here at HOW. Generally, closer to Annapols, higher the $$$. In Annap proper, hard to get and very high. You have to know all the little marinas off the creeks, etc. That is unless you want the pool and all the luxuries. Then def go to Annap - get on the waiting lists now. The controlling issue here is traffic - car - where you are coming from and when/how often you want to get to your boat. A 1 hour drive becomes 3 in summer rush hour. You might want to decide where you are living first - seriously. As for the tax issue, that is in a state of flux. Recent ruling is that only applies if the boat was purchased with the --intent-- of using it in MD waters the majority of the time - think 6 months. The law has now been construed very liberally. There are ways around it. But hey, dinghy reg is free! Of couse, they are glad to let you do it, but the monitoring has basically stopped I think. You don't have to register anytime soon. Check around first...a long time.

depending on what your needs are and how much you want to spend. See link. For example, I live about 10 miles south of Metro, DC, and keep my boat at Herrington Harbour, about a 50 min drive for me. The Maryland DNR is actively searching the marinas for boat staying over six months. Ive been told by the live aboards they are coming through about every 3 months snaping pictures. One of the boats got hit for $2500 for not registering. Anyway Doghouse, at our marina we have very nice rates and the sailing is great. No pool but it is quite. One hour from the Wilson bridge to the marina. Check out Cobb Island, MD. Jim S/V Java

Ok, so at this point the company is moving from here to Herndon, VA. I have a 27' hunter with in mast furling so I have to watch the bridges. We are looking for something simple, a pool would be nice, but in the past 2 years we used it one time when the granddaughter came in town. We mostly do day sailing, and some weekend trips, but nothing major. I would not be living aboard as it just is not enough room for 2 people 1 dog and 3 cats. I figured there would be tax issues, so that is one of the reasons I am asking for any information anyone can help me with.
Ok, so at this point the company is moving from here to Herndon, VA. I have a 27' hunter with in mast furling so I have to watch the bridges. We are looking for something simple, a pool would be nice, but in the past 2 years we used it one time when the granddaughter came in town. We mostly do day sailing, and some weekend trips, but nothing major. I would not be living aboard as it just is not enough room for 2 people 1 dog and 3 cats. I moved a boat from NJ to MD 7 yrs ago and yes MD wanted to see their tax money. All I had to do was show them I had already paid the tax to a different state and they were happy. If you buy a boat and then try to register it in a tax free state such as Delaware then MD will come after you. I know several people who got caught during the 2005 winter. Seems as though the tax folks take note of where you had it in the summer, then come back in the winter to see if you are still there. That's when they get you.

Herndon, you will have about a 1 and a half hour ride (non-rush hour weekends) to reach the bay. You will have a number of choices of marinas nearest to you, but the biggest problem at this time of year will be slip availablity. My advice to you would be to find a "mostly suitable" marina, try to lock up a slip for this season, and then spend next winter sorting out where you really want to be. I would not recommend the Annapolis area as it's very popular, expensive, and the harbor is crowded on weekends. It's a great place if money is no concern, you are really into racing, and really like the "life." But I would suggest looking in Deale, Md (20 miles south of Annapolis) at Herrington Harbour North (not South), Shady Side and Galesville (10 mi south of Annapolis), and Edgewater as well as Selby Bay off the South River. The link I posted in my previous post will take you to marinas in those locations. Look at marinas on the South, West, and Rhode Rivers. You'll really like sailing here. If you need names/phones of specific marinas, let me know.
