I posted this same topic last July but I'd like some more input as the issue is STILL raging between the sail loft and myself. The attached photo is how the spinnaker design looked the first time we pulled it out of the bag. The second one is what we saw when we opened up the bag. Is it normal for that much paint to fall off or not bind in the first place? Do any of your sails with painted on sail numbers or designs look the same way? Double click on the images to get a closer look. Thanks. I'm looking for REAL answers here as the sailmaker and myself are obviously a bit biased ;-)

Not sure it's a REAL answer, but I've never seen PAINT used to successfully color a design on a spin. The three common techniques are:

Inlay - cut the design in with spin cloth - costly but best, in particular with dark backgrounds.

Appliqué - vinyl stickers applied to sailcloth. Adds weight. Best for smaller designs.

Ink - light and easy. Best on light colored (white) areas. Most common.

AFAICT paint is assured to chip and peal.

I think the real question at hand is what 'guarantees' did you have either verbally or in written form from your chosen sail loft. If the loft issued no 'warnings' about painted sails .... then they are at fault, etc. and should be convinced to an agreeable compensation.

Its quite typical of textile paints to eventually 'fall off' from synthetic fabric such as dacron or nylon.

I am certainly no expert on the subject but I have heard with "painted sails" if put away wet they will bleed. That is hard not to do for those of us in the Pacific Northwest.

Well, it was only flown once all last year and it did not get wet at that time.
