Just found out my 74 22 O'Day has foam in the mast - wanted to put cable down the mast inside - any suggestions
Also plan to drill through the top to put cable inside- is it just fiberglass or does it have a core ???

Sorry Gordon, I don't make long distance phone calls.

If I was faced with this problem I would do everything possible to get a coaxial cable through that mast even if it meant removing the foam. I would also want to install a mast head light at the top of this mast.
Maybe you should find out the make of the mast and ask the manufacturer if they're still in business, why they did this. It could be for flotation purposes or it could have something to do with the reinforcement of the mast. The only other person who may know for sure is Rudy at D&R Marine. http://www.drmarine.com/
With that said, I remember reading on this forum several years ago about someone else who was faced with this same problem on his O'Day 22. I'm pretty sure that he succeeded in getting the wires in his mast.

You should be able to run a wire snake through foam then pull your cable(s) back.

I agree with mcassidy. I would try running a thick heavy duty electrician's snake through the foam.

I taped together about five unwound coat hangers. No problem.

What I would do is run a tag line in the mast with the coax and leave it in there just in case I wanted to wire in a mast head light later on.

Unless you are going more than 10 miles offshore you may want ot re think this. On my 25 I added an 8' piece of 1.5" PVC pipe vertically to the stern rail with two hose clamps. VHF antenna went on top. Total height about 11'. I use a 3db gain antenna ($18). , and have no need to have troublesome disconnects when storing for the winter or when taking the mast downl Reception is great up to about 15 miles and more, depending on reciever height. I had a 45 foot long hollow spruce mast with solid blocking in the way of the spreaders located at mid height. To drill a 1 inch hole through the blocking for the masthead light wires, I just brazed a auger drill bit to the end of some 1/2 inch water pipe and a 1/2 inch rod to the other end. Guess what? It worked!!!
For drilling through solid foam, I would probably just roughen the end of the pipe instead of attaching the auger. With a 3 or 4 inch angle grinder, coarse teeth can be shaped in the end of the pipe like a hole saw.
