I have a 1982 DaySailer II and I purchased a new self-bailing unit, but I'm having problems getting the original unit off. I was told that there's a retaining ring that doesn't seem to be on there, but there's a cap screwed tightly onto the unit. It's been on there for 20 years and I haven't been able to budge it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, David

Is it nylon

If it is you could just snap the top hex nut off or snap it off from the bottom. First, if it is the cone with the opening facing backwards, and a hex type head in the boat, I am sure that this can be done. I would however try again to unscrew it. I just removed one on saturday that had a hard bedding compound that I had to use a wood chisel on but once the bedding material was removed from the hex head, it unscrewed no problem. This was on a sunbird not a Daysailor II If it is not a hex head as described I can look at a Daysailor II on saturday when I go back to the shop. r.w. landau

Not Nylon - Metal Self-Bailer

Thanks for your reply. The entire self-bailing unit is metal with a metal cap. I tried everything on the cap and was not able to budge it at all. So, I took a hacksaw and cut the unit off the bottom of the boat. Now I'm left with the cap stuck on the threaded shaft and I'm not able to get the shaft out of the boat. Any suggestions?

I looked at one

At the shop on saturday. They had removed the selfbailer and glassed it over, leaving only the drain plug. I still think that the shaft on that bailer is the same diameter all the way through. is the bedding loose under the hex head? r.w.landau

Bedding is not loose

The bedding is not loose under the hex head. Actually, nothing is lose. The shaft fits into the boat so tightly that one would think it's one with the boat or it's cemented in! I'm afraid to bang the shaft too hard, as I don't want to cause damage to the boat. The last resort is to take it to someone to try and get the darn thing removed, but I just purchased the boat and don't want to sink much more money into it. Any suggestions?
