Need help with my boat naming

Catalina 27 Dana Point
Hi all,

I've been working on restoring my 1978 Catalina 27 for about a year now. I recently had the entire hull refinished including removal of the original name, which was painted on.

I'd like the new name to be the following:

Anastasia
Dana Point, CA

Questions:

Does anyone have recommended size and dimensions I should make the new name based on what you did for your Catalina 27?

Should I go with paint or letters? I'm more than capable of putting the name on myself with proper directions...and have a dinghy.

Any recommended companies out there to order through?

Thanks!

I like what the PO did on the C-27. He used vinyl letters. My wife likes the name so it stays.

I just ordered a new name and numbers for our C30. Ordered from an online seller for a reasonable price, tons of fonts, colors and vinyl types to choose from. I just measured out the spaces we want to fill and got creative, ordered the premium reflective vinyl. Should be putting them on this weekend.

We designed our own, in Word draw IIRC, and brought the file to Tap Plastics and they made it for us.

Lots of options.

1. I think vinyl letters would look better as you can do so much more.

2. Take a few pictures of your boat, get a few dimensions near whrere the lettering is going, and start pasting on letters with your computer (on the pictures).

If you can find a vinyl lettering shop near you, they can do anything and the cost is not prohibitive. If your can give them a font file of your own choosing, they can do that as well. Or they can use their own. I found a neat font (Caribbean's Treasure) on a web site and they were able to use the font.

The lettering on our boat below is not real, just pasted on using Microsoft Paint. I had erased the old font (Brush Script MT) on the picture and inserted the new font and used reference dimensions from the boat to design the exact size and location for the lettering. No unpleasant surprises when it went on:eek: .

Stu, Ralph, do you remember the format you save it in? When I tried to get one made a few years ago for a Seabee OB I was restoring I found a perfect logo on line and they could not use the Jpeg image. She explained that the printer plotter/cutter had to have a special format they could not convert to. Or have things improved in the world of graphics that it doesn't matter?
Stu can't seem to find Word Draw IIRC.

1.Walk around the marina and look at lettering style and placement you like. There are lots of boats there (over 2000) and plenty of C27s (including mine).

2.West Marine has an excellent boat graphics and lettering service that I have used for nearly 20 years. They have an online form with samples and suggestions, and will help you over the phone when you have an idea of what you want. I just replaced some damaged 10 year old lettering on my boat using them and had the finished product on my front porch in a few days.

Frank,

I don't recall for sure whether I used PAINT or WORD. Somehow that files got lost in our many computer dances ovetr the past 16 years. One of these days I'll "rebuild" it.

Word Draw can be found by going to Help in Word and typing in draw. They show how to access it and use it.

If you tell us what format she said you needed, I'm sure some geeks here could help you out. Or find out what they CAN accept.

Most sign companies prefer either eps (best option) or pdf.

With the exotic font I had tripped over on the web, the print shop I was using asked for the "true type font" file (_ .ttf ). They were then able to use this in their printer/cutter to cut out the words. I had to supply the length of one word in order for them to set the size of the font. I had several sizes I wanted.

I don't think a picture of the lettering will work as they need the font file to supply the font you desire. Google search 'fonts" if you are looking for something specific. There are literally hundreds of sites with free downloads of different fonts.

That was the problem I had then. I did find a guy who had decals but he wanted $38 each. I finally gave in and bought them but they did not hold up well.

When I did the ones for Whisper they were able to make in vinyl, script with a drop shadow. I think I also submitted a TTF font.

fontspace is a good website that allows you to create your own choice of font style, size and type....
type the name of your choice in the box and then scroll thru til you find what you like....

you have many different catagorys of styles to choose from, but the link is for the "basic" styles.....

once you have found what you like, make a note of the style, size and type... take it to the vinyl lettering company of your choice and tell them... they can go to the site, download what you want and cut it for you...

I use this all the time and it saves a bunch of money in design costs because I am able to do it all myself and keep with it til I get what I want.... then have it cut.
