I have a 1977 model Hunter thirty. I am having trouble with my shift cable and do not have an owners manual. I could not seem to get the cable adjusted so that I could shift fully into forward when it is adjusted to go fully into reverse, or visa-versa. The end of the cable where it goes to the shifting fork on the transmission has now broken so that a cable replacement appears to be mandatory. Is there a way that I can find the right part number and where I can order one. Doug Dixon E-Mail is 2ds@gateway.net

Cable replacement

I just did the exact job on my Catalina 30. Most sailboat steering systems are Edson made. Once this is confirmed, the procedure is located here. http://www.edsonintl.com/marine/faq/eb92316.htm It wasn't difficult, except I realized that you'll need to loosen the steering cable a lot, to get the chain off of the sprockett in order to get the cables up to remove the cable holder. Sounds confusing, but once you get it apart it will be easy to understand. Also, I used a light gauge wire to pull the cables into position, and get the cable holder back into place. Double the wire up and push the loop through the hole in the back of pedestal, and up. Wrap it around the cable holder, and when positioning the cables, keep tension on the wire, and pull cable holder into place. If you decide to tackle this, email me for more info. mpegler@gte.net

Cable replacement cont.

Sorry, forgot to tell you that the cable is extremely common. Made by Tel-flex, all you really need is the cable length. I took the old one with me to the Chandlery to make sure it was a match. Good luck!
