I am moving a boat to Savannah and would like someone to walk me through proper steps on a 28.5. Yard will be pulling the boat, but I want to be certain of what I am doing. Thanks in advance for the info. Rich

haven't done it but...

Make sure they put a fat seat cushion on the deck under the mast base if they even think of resting it on the deck in the process of manipulating the mast! Learned about it later ;< Jim

Mast

Didn't quite understand what help you are asking for but I will tell you from experience that the mast on the 28.5 is not a lightweight. Are you intending to do it yourself? If so, you will need a crane or some sort of hoisting capability like a gin pole. Really nothing unique about it from any other mast. Connect forestay and two side stays first, then the back stay, then the lowers. Make sure the wiring doesn't get pinched at the step. If you have never done one before, I would hire a yard to do it and be there to watch and learn. What you you can do, and is very impportant, is tune the rig while it is on the ground according to the manual. Instructions can be also found on this site. This can make a big differnce in how the boat sails. Make sure the tension is symetrical from side to side. You should also make sure the steaming and anchor lights are operating before raising the stick. Make sure the lenses are not clouded. If so, replace or try cleaning with toothpaste It is also a good time to check the sheaves for wear along with the halyards. Tighten all hardware. If you are bothered by wiring banging inside the mast, this is a great time to fix that problem with cable ties. Don't forget to put on or retape spreader boots and tape cotter pins. Good luck.

Nee help strpping the mast

I have moved my Hunter 28.5 across the country from Seattle to Rhode Island and back. The first time I dismantled the mast, I made a drawing and documented the different parts and how my mast was assembled . I then completely dis-assembled it, wrapping the halyards down around the mast and the roller furler. I labeled all pieces and parts, coiling and packing them inside the boat. I wrapped the mast with moving blankets, then with black pastic, followed by a solid layer of packing tape. I had a transport company haul my boat and the mast sat in a special brakets made for mast. Both trips were trouble free. Assembling was easy because of the diagram. Tuning is a must before the yard steps the mast. Take your time and do it right.
