I have a 1995 hunter 430. One of the large non opening windows in the salon has started leaking. The plastic has lost its bond with the silicone. I plan on resiliconeing the window with the black 4200. Also what type of plastic is it and where can you get it?

Hi Ryan, we've never had a problem with ...

our fixed port lights. Hunter probably used some sort of polyurethane adhesive (3M4200) as opposed to silicon. If it were my boat i would contact Hunter Marine Customer Service for the re-bedding procedure and adhesive they recommend. Terry

sealant

you want to use something which is both a sealant and adhesive such as Dow makes specifically for this purpose. If you do as Terry suggests and ask Hunter, they will tell you more specifically but there are also descriptions here in the archives if you want to check. The 4200 might work but not sure what long term prognosis might be.

Dow 795

Ryan: I just patched an area on our HV36. I used Dow 795 in a charcoal. I believe that is the original material. Shop around and you can get it for about $6/tube.

Get the screws right too.

I had the same problem and used poly-sulfide with great success so far (3 years). The key, I believe, was getting all the screws to hold. In my first attempt I used silicon and did not get all the screws to hold as some where stripped out. Well it lasted no time at all as the water hose test demonstrated when the silicon had set. I took the panel out and drilled out the holes, filled then with thickened epoxy and re drilled them for the screws. Having a mechanical bond and not using silicon (it does not have the adhesive properties of poly) was the trick for me. Also the Plexiglas panel is 3/8" which is not normally available at home depot. I had to order it on line. If I had to do it again I'd spend the extra bucks on lextan as I am now seeing glazing cracks (the panel is curved about 3" in a 36" run). Seems I can't get the admiral and kids to not step on it when messing around the mast.
