first thing is to clean it, is it a swing keel? if it is if you get yuo trailoer level water will drain out of the cockpit. also reinstall a door on your cabin to keep water out. you need to make a mirror image of your hatch slip for the port sid also when installing use stainless screw and washers on both sides of the hole

Jason,
as said here first thing is to clean her up good. Then look her over carefully from bow to stern. Keep a note book and make notes on things that look like they need work or need replacement. Check all of the standing rigging for any loose or missing rivets, missing nuts bolts or screws, cracked brackets ect. Take some pictures along the line of things your not sure of so you can come back here and post them and get answers.

If your familiar with basic running rigging (lines, pulleys and cleats) you can get an idea if you are missing any parts. Keep making notes and then when you have finished your cleaning and inspection you can start a list of what the most important things you will need to do first. Some things may need work and some may be OK for now.

When I got my little boat. It needed some glass work and paint for the bottom. I started there. No leaks, and sturdy hull was my priority - you may not need that. I looked at all the pictures and books that I could to figure out the proper way to run my running rigging. I found a few parts were missing. I needed to buy a coulple blocks and some lines. I then went on to less important things like refinsihing the teak.

I then raised the mast and attached the boom in the back yard (while she was pointed into the wind) and raised the main and completely rigged her. I made sure everything was proper and squared away. I then added a few things like a boom lift and a rudder lift. As I ran through the whole idea of sailing her in my head I thought of other things needed. By the time I was ready to put her in the water I had covered everything pretty well.

I am still tuning and changing things as I sail her more and more. Im a hot rodder and tweaker at heart. I love setting things up to make it easy and fun to sail. The notes and pictures are always helpful when you want to go down to the marina and get some help there and they sure make a nice record of all your hard work. Remember the more work you can do yourself the less money you will have to spend. Make sure when you get her in the water you have all your saftey gear on board plus anchors and rode.

God Bless, jimmyb

Spray the exterior with Amazing Roll-Off available at West Marine. Then get hold of a power washer and wash the whole hull and cockpit. I might even suggest you powerwash the interior if you have a pump handy. Get the cabin tight against rain first. McGregor cabin window gaskets are famous for leaks so you might start there by removing the exterior window trim, the gaskets and the windows. Just screws. Refurbish the gaskets with weatherstrip products you can get a car parts stores. Then reinstall using a good silicone sealer. Once you get some drop boards on her the cabin won't suffer anymore damage and you can move on. In my opinion that would be job 1 after the boat and trailer is leveled so that the cockpit drains.

Jason,
Like JimmyB, I'm a bit of an ex-hotrodder myself and did much the same thing on my V21. Good advice already given: level the boat and trailer for the water to drain; pump out cabin and bilge after you set up protection/covers for hatch and lazarette openings. Once this is done you might get "lucky" and be trapped in the cabin during a heavy rain to be able to find any hidden deck leaks. Once you have that done, you can start really cleaning up and sorting out standing rigging which seems to be there(condition unknown from pic) already.
While I don't see your lines in the pics, I do see the board(possibly teak but could be made from other hardwoods) missing that goes accross the bunks at the hatch that holds up the keel winch.
Many old V21's were modified in their running rigging/sheets by previous owners and how you rig running lines may depend on what was already done to the boat. My rigging was all makeshift when I got it and I eventually recreated the original mainsheet system and ran lines to the cockpit as the seasons to sail went along.

As someone has mentioned, you can paint the interrior. I had a V21 (long time ago), fun boat, fast but tender. I painted the inside using a good quailty oil based paint. Be sure to clean the inside with bleach/water. Now is a good time while you have it stripped out. A new coat of paint will make a huge different inside, looks and smells good!

Othe possibilities for the cabin interior are indoor/outdoor carpet held in place with 3M headliner adhesive or foam backed vinyl held in place the same way. I have seen both and both look good. The difficult part of both are the seems where pieces join up. You don't have that worry with paint.
