I am needing some advice/recommendations for a fuel filter for my Yanmar 2GM on my Hunter 31.
I only know I have 1/4" lines and I want 10 micron for my Diesal.
I want a.water separator and would be nice to have self priming or some sort of hand pump on filter to clear air in lines.

I think it would it be great to have a clear bowl to be able to see the water and any gunk.

I am strongly looking at the Racor line.

My first choice is the New Snapp 23299-10
It is Diesal 1/4" lines 10micron self priming

I called Racor tech and they recommended the120R-RAC and I did emphasize this was Diesal. The Racor site says this is gas only.

It appears that the 230RMAM is for Diesal and 10 micron 1/4" lines

Currently replacing the original bronze filter monster.

Stupid me, thought it would be a great idea last Nov to run the engine out of fuel to clean the tank, without looking at how hard it is or how to to even start the task...original tank. Any advice on cleaning tanks?
Well got air in the system and probably gunk

Finally this past weekend put 5 gallons in the tank. Read up on this forum on bleeding the system and finally got it started but will only run a few minutes before stopping. It does run smooth when it's running.

Then I have to start over trying to bleed the system got freaking blisters on my thumb using the little priming pump on the engine manual priming pump.

Any and all advice/ comments is massively appreciated..got to getter running...WX is getting good...time for sailing and fun
Thanks a million Kevin

The Racor 120 can be had with a Diesel option (I think it is 120AT). The 230 is probably too big, but it is a good filter, for sure. I just changed from 220 to SNAPP, for cost and ease of replacing the filter.

All of the above are quite costly to replace the filter element (SNAPP - you need to replace the entire thing (sans the bracket); the other two - the spin on element). The 220/230 will be more costly than 120.

Look at Racor 500 series, especially, if you need to replace the filter elements often.

I bought a Racor 230R2 last year for my 3GMF. The filter works as expected and is easy to prime with the built in priming pump.

Cheers

If you have access to the top of your tank I highly recommend you install an access plate. You can then get in your tank and clean it. I clean mine out every year and there is always some residue in the bottom of the tank and I always treat my fuel.

That's interesting. On my H31 all the lines except the return are 5/16". I guess the PO changed it when she installed the electric fuel pump and the racor.

I have a 2GM in my '83 H31. I have a Racor R12T primary filter with the clear bowl, then a line from there to an outboard engine bulb that pushes the fuel into the low pressure side of the engine. It has worked great. If your engine is stopping after it runs a while it could be that your tank vent is clogged. That recently happened to me and of course the tank vent is the thing I check last, after changing both the filters. Also, there is a bleed screw on the high pressure pump its self that sometimes needs to be bled. I just looked at your link to the Racor filter. You don't need anything with that flow capacity. At full throttle your burn rate will be well lees than a gallon per hour. You can save money by going a lot smaller on your primary filter and still get the proper filtering that you need.

Davejet,

My 1983 H 31 has the Racor 500FG.

We lost the engine sailing two weekends ago, and I spent Saturday morning this weekend replacing both Filters. The Racor, and the on-engine secondary,

At first, based upon engine failure mode, I thought my problem was clogged filters, but they were not really dirty at all. My fuel gauge must be inaccurate, and I had run her dry. Changing the filters was a lot easier than I expected. I refilled the tank with new Diesel and some biocide type diesel stabilizer for good measure. The previous owner had filled her with Off-Road Diesel that was ruby red in color compared to the yellow road fuel that I put in. Bleeding the fuel lines all the way back to the injectors took a long time, and required me to open the bleed screws at the secondary fuel filter, and at the inlet to the HP fuel pump. Then I had to loosen the fuel banjo at the furthest injector to get all of the air out of the system.

Hearing her come to life and run again was music to my ears, and a weight off my mind.

Good luck.

The use of an electric fuel pump pretty much eliminates bleeding, though it has pros and cons. Pros: Pumps are very low pressure and very inexpensive. Not sure what their ampere draw is though it drains only when the alternator is running. I have a switched second backup pump in case the primary fails. Complete power failure will call for superior sailing skills or reinstallation of the mechanical pump which is shockingly expensive to replace or rebuild.
