What's the difference between a 27 and a 27 TM?

What's the TM stand for? Twin mast? Manny

TM = Tall Mast.

A Twin Mast would be a ketch or yawl or even a schooner. :) Not sure why but both Hunter and Catalina had tall mast versions of their 27s and 30s and maybe even bigger boats. The site that I reference has dimensions for a tall 30 but not the H27(Related Link). Does anyone know, was it just the full keel boats that had tall masts?

Tall mast?

Ed, I thought the 27's of that era all had the same sized mast, roughly 36.5 ft long (+- 39 ft from the waterline). I thought these were just considered a high aspect rigs... My mast is this height and is as tall as rigs on many 30 footers. I have a shoal keel on mine also. Anyway I may have my old forestay in my basement. If I find it I'll measure it and post it on this thread. Manny

Manny is right the 27' Cherubinis all came with

the same size mast. The key word is came as if from factory; over the years some of these boats may have been re-rigged so it would be advisable to measure your headstay and not use stock figures. The tall rig classification of the h27 was a name marketing ploy as during those years tall high aspect sail plans were in vogue. Some manufacturers offered both a normal and a tall rig but Hunter deside to not offer the normal. Can there be a tall rig if there is not a normal? I guess if you compare them to the competion normals it makes it a tall rig. They were designed to be the least expensive production 27 in the market and they built one heck of a versatile boat.

Keith - 38 feet 2 5/8 inches

At least that is what my forestay length is (give or take roughly and eighth to a quarter inch). Tonight I measured the one I had replaced last year. It was measured from the center of hole for the pin at the mast head to the end of swaged fitting for the turnbuckle at the bow. I don't know if it was the original forestay since my 27 has a CDI furler on it, also I do not know if there were any modifications made to the rig at any point. At least it should be a good starting point to get an estimate on cost. Hope this helps, Manny

Well...

I checked the forestay on my 1976 H27 and it was 34-11" from the center of the eye to the end of the bow turnbuckle thread - maxed out with the turnbuckle fully extended would be know more than 35'-8". My mast is 33'-1" long. Seems there may have been a change in the later models. Randy
