Need more information from you

Where do you want to put the y-valve? Assuming that it's in the sanitation system...in the line between the toilet and the tank? Or in the tank pumpout line?

Or...if it's not going into the sanitation plumbing, where DO you want to put it...and why?

I need detailed Y valve installation instructions or YouTube video link for 1991- Hunter Legend 35.5? PLEASE HELP? Thx
Sorry, I did not say where I want a Y valve. I want it between the head and holding tank. Currently, my boat has a head, holding tank, macerator & seacock. There is no Y valve to be able to go direct from head to seacock when at sea. A friend of mine who is a physicist (smart) & a salty dog said he would help, but pulled away after inspecting & I think as he was worried if he did wrong it could sink my boat while sailing ??
I assume there have been many owners of Hunter 1991 - 35.5 Legends have installed a Y valve. It seems in talking to other boaters everyone has a Y valve except me. I know there will be issues I need to be aware of, therefore, I was hoping there is someone who has dealt with the nuances that my 91-35.5 has & could advise (preferably a YouTube video or installation instructions). thx

I'd wait till you're a LOT more familiar with the boat

And also have learned a lot more about marine sanitation system plumbing. 'Cuz I'm concerned that you'd need a video to understand how to do what's actually a pretty straightforward job on ANY boat for someone who IS familiar with boat plumbing...which your alleged "salty dog" physicist doesn't seem to be either, but at least had the good sense to back out of the job.

And there's another consideration: you'd have to be in the Gulf at least 3 miles outside Tampa Bay to legally flush your toilet directly overboard (or dump the tank)...how much time aboard do you realistically expect to spend sailing the open waters of the Gulf in the next 6 months, or even a year?

I suspect you're anxious to do this 'cuz your holding tank is filling up too fast. Learning how to use your toilet's dry mode can increase the number of flushes your tank can hold by as much as 100%. And there are other little tricks...

So I suggest you slow down and spend some time learning all you can about the existing system and plumbing...and THEN decide what mods you need. You might decide to go with a Type I MSD (USCG certified device that treats and discharges waste LEGALLY in Tampa Bay and everywhere else in FL coastal waters except the Keys) in addition to the y-valve AND the vented loop you'll need too.

Great advice Peggy
I know on my 40.5 we went from needing to pump out every weekend to about once a month just by using the dry mode and making sure all the kids had gone to the bathroom on shore before departing the dock.

I want to install the Y valve & will......... I sail beyond 3 miles from the coast quite often as it only take me 10-15 minutes to be in Gulf. And, my only child just went off to college & I am semi-retired and available to go off anywhere, anytime.
As far as wanting to get a video goes, I am the type that tries to assemble all the available good info & then going forward with the new challenge. We are now a global Internet society. If it available on video, I want to see it. If not, I will go without it. I learned last year how viral we are now from my son and the recruiting process for D1 football (YouTube).
So with all that said, I already realize this is not rocket science. However, I have found resistance to achieving this course of action. I also read in a thread by an owner it was a more complex undertaking than expected for his 35.5. And, that was all he input. As a result, that has bought an air of caution for me.
I ask again, please help me to form a plan to install a Y valve in my 91-legend 35.5. Thx

I can take a photo of mine tonight it is very basic the tee to the macerator.

However, you should also try Peggie's hot towel test on your sanitation hoses you may need to replace them sooner rather than later.

Any 35.5 owner/expert that has installed Y valve/vented loop

Please let me know the process you went through & what, if any, problems occurred? Also, what brand Y valve did you use? Thx

Photo of Tee at Macerator

Sorry for the delay with the photos my apology.
Here is my tee which is located on the bow side of the last stern bulkhead below the lazarette. My aft cabin has a generous access hatch installed when the tank was replaced. The vent can be an issue on our boats.
Good Luck.

Any hoses that have turned that color should definitely be replaced...if they don't stink, they're so old that they've become so hard and brittle that they can start to crack. The black 1" hose coming off the macerator isn't even sanitation hose.

Fwiw, I would go with a y-valve, never a tee (boat builders use tees because they cost a lot less than y-valves)...'cuz tee doesn't provide any way to shut off the flow of waste from the tank to service the macertor pump...and macerators only need service when the tank is full, never when it's empty.

Thanks for your advice. I always enjoy your posts.

I will put it at the top of my spring list, from the ''bowl to the box''.

There is some dust on the pipes [in the hi res pic] I took so it might look worse.
