What works best in refinishing the wooden transom that holds the outboard. Ive got mine on the bench and it is well sanded, though still showing discoloration from years (10 yrs) of sitting unprotected. Can the discoloration be bleached out? What works best for a refinishing coat. There must be someone out there who has been there/done that!!

What year is this "23.5"

My 23.5 is a 1994 and my transom has no wood on it. Please provide more information. I have spoken with a seasoned sailor that uses the epoxy/urethane topcoat system. He sands the teak then wipes it down with Methyl-Ethyl Ketone (MEK) just prior to applying two coats of clear epoxy. After the epoxy cures you must wash the expoxy coat with soap and water prior to applying polyurethane becasue the poly won't stick to the epoxy as is. Lightly sand between polyurethane coats. Hope this helps

Sand It .

Art - You are refering to what is called the "Motor Mount" not the "Transom". Best bet for refinishing if badly discolored is to sand it down to new clean wood and coat it with a polyurethane "Spar Finish" available at Marine supply stores. Sand it lightly between coats and apply several coatsallowing each to dry thoroughly. Choose one with an ultraviolet light protection and the job will last longer.

Cetol

Mine was just sanded and Cetol was applied. It looks great and the finish will last longer than varnish. The Crazy one had some fine folks fix me right up.

Cetol with top coat

I did some refinishing on our teak and used Cetol with their top coat semi-gloss. It holds up well and should protect the wood for a long time. The added benefit is it looks really good. Rob h23 Euphoria

Reply to Jonathan

It's a 93 version and I don't think the wood is teak. It has been sanded and maybe I need to sand the darn thing lots more to get rid of the greyish weathering that is imbedded in the wood grain. I guess the right nomenclature is the "outboard mounting board". I am will put it on the belt sander some more and see what happens. Wish I knew for sure what kind of wood it is!

When all else fails

Call Greg at Hunter and he can probably tell you. If not he can narrow it down. Good luck.
