I pulled my boat for Ivan and it will ride out the storm in our carport while we go visit freinds in North Carolina. My question is, is it OK to leave the ballast tank full while it is stitting on the trailer? It certainly seems that it would be better off with the additional weight I'm just wondering if the unsuppoted weight is a problem if I leave it like that for a week or so. What do y'all think?

Fresh water?

If it is fresh water, you may leave it in so you have some fresh water after the hurricane. Hope you do well whatever you do.

How secure is the carport?

Rick, In 1995 parents in Pensacola, lost a carport to Erin I believe. The wind got under it and just lifted it up and ripping it from the side of the house. Dad now has it anchored into the ground with 6ft anchors that are use for light poles. Good Luck! Jim S/V Java

My Frances experince

My car was in the carport. I used three mobile home screw anchors to chain the trailer to the ground, and left the truck hitched to the trailer. Used extra lines to tie the boat (Hunter 240) to the trailer. Came through with no problems. It may just depend on the direction of the wind compared to the location of your carport. All but two of the 18 or so boats in my mooring area ended up on the beach, my 8 foot walker bay and and islander freeport 36 made it. I left the ballast tank empty for fear of damaging the boat If I were you and had the time, I might think about some way to secure the trailer to the ground. Marc_B in West Palm Beach

Carport

The carport is enclosed on three sides. I am going to leave it hooked up to the truck. If we keep our roof it is pretty secure. If we loose the roof we have bigger problems to deal with than the boat. It is going to be one hell of a ride for where ever it lands.

Take her with you

If she's hitched up to the truck, why not drain her and take her with you to NC?

Yep, NC

then at least you'd have somewhere to sleep on the road and/or back home if the worst happened.

tie downs

Go buy some truck/trailer tie downs and strap down everywhere you can hook on to. Strap it to the trailer and then strap the trailer to the carport. It can't hurt and tie downs are cheaper than a new boat...

Water Ballast

The tide here leaves my H23.5 sitting on the beach for twelve hours a day in between high tides - with the water ballast tank full - no problem !

From my reading of the manual, you should...

...empty the tank. That being said, the marina left water in twice after sling hauling and placing on the trailer for one to two weeks without a problem. Nice picture of a 240 drying out! Good luck with the storms. alan

car port

My neighbors have a car port on the place in Port St. Lucy. Carport got pulled away from the house damaging it, maybe you'd want to think twice about leaving it there Brad

My IVAN experience

In my estimation it is a mistake to secure a 23.5 anywheres near trees/carports or anything else subject to wind damage. After unhitching block under the rear-most trailer cross frame member with 4X4s; jack up the front end sufficient enough to position stacked up cinderblockx with a 2x6 on top so they are under the formost frame member and side frames, right behind the trailer jack. Lower the jack so the boat weight is on both the front and rear supports. Fill it with water, and pray.

My 260 made it through

Couldn't pull her out (no truck) so I put out one MASSIVE plow anchor and my regular danforth in standard V pattern with 100ft of rode in about 6 feet of water) - protected against chaff with fire house - we got back today (went to Jacksonville) and got back today. Boat is fine with some water inside (ah, the Hunter hatch boards/slider...) unfortunately, a fellow sailor who left sail tied down to mast was not so luck - only the mast above the spreader is visable. Best of luck to all, Fair winds and clear skies

Did Fine! Hope Y'all Did Too

Never made it to North Carolina. My wife was up in New Jersey because her mother had died. I was home with the two kids trying to get the house ready. I managed to get the windows boarded up patio furniture in the pool, and everything else put away outside, then had to find the photo albums and valuables to take with me. We have been in the house less than two months and much of the stuff is still in boxes. Of course the albums, jewelry boxes, etc. were not where she said they were. We left here at 0430 on Wednesday stopped for lunch in Columbus. I was so beat I decide that if I could find a room we would ride it out there. Checked a few places was about to give up and found a suite at a Sleep Inn. The folks at the hotel were super and we really enjoyed our stay. They serve breakfast every morning and do a happy hour in the evenings all for the same price other place were charging. The place was full of Ivan evacuees and military folks temporarily assigned to Fort Benning so we felt right at home. Came home Sunday rushed to get the generator fired up on the refrigerator and a window AC I had bought just for this occasion. Just as everything was set and the room was getting cool I made a smart ass comment to my wife about her not getting to us the AC who had given me a hard time about buying the air conditioner the power came back on. Our cable back on Monday evening so we are all back to normal (whatever that is) I'll touch up the bottom paint and put the boat back in next week. We were really lucky lost no trees not a shingle and our only problem is six trash (so far) bags of leaves in the pool. Hope all the others out there fared as well.
