Have a laptop at nav station for chartplotter and want a swingout touchscreen in the companionway. There was a thread on this a few weeks ago but I can't find it. Someone was going to install something like this
http://www.gooddeals18.com/product/SHK1040/new-104-Desktop-TFT-LCD-Monitor-w-Touch-Screen--VGA.html

Is this suitable and do I connect to laptop via usb and where do I get a 10 ft usb cord. If want to hard wire the power, if I cut the cigarette plug off do I have issues with polarity when connecting to house's 12v and if so how do I figure out when wire is pos and neg in the cord coming out of the screen?

Where do I get a swing arm bracket?

Finally, never used a touch screen, but will this allow me to zoom in/out from the remote screen if I can do this my clicking the cursor on screen "buttons" on the laptop chartplotter program. I run The Captain software.

Finally, The Captain solftware has a night view function where you can turn the screen brightness down and with a red hue. Will the remote screen durplicate this without adjusting the remote screen?

go to someplace like www.Tigerdirect.com

and search for monitor arms or usb cables and you will find lot of variations to choose from. Or do the same searches in the google window.

remote vidio from a computer

Never heard of a remote video screen from a computer over USB. I believe it has to be a video cable from the video port and you will also need a mouse cable to transmit the touch screen data back to the computer. That may be via USB.

I would caution against putting a monitor on deck. It will get salted up in short order unless it is a weatherproof model. Weather proof monitors are not much cheaper than dedicated weather proof chart plotters so ....... When you consider that you will need to replace the monitor in short order the chart plotter starts to look more and more cost effective.

Tritton makes a USB adapter. If you are hooking up via USB the cables can me made to length. What are you going to do for power?

thanks guys

Tigerdirect has the cables. Did some more research and screen connects with VGA cable. I am still guessing that the USB cable is for the touch screen function.

The plan is for the remote screen to mount in cabin and swing out to view through companionway. Boat has a dodger, so should stay dry.
