I have a 1983 Hunter 34. I've never checked the tension on the rigging. I plan on getting a LOOS Tension Guage. Can someone direct me to where I find out the wire diameters on the H34 and the correct tension that I should measure for on the guage? Thanks in advance. Joe Mullee

Different sizes...

Joe, I have the small and mid-size Loos Professional gauges from smaller boats but you will need the largest one for our H34's. The gauge documentation gives the tensil strength by wire size and what percentages of tension are applied per the gauge being positioned on a shroud. These B&R rigs are best set up off the boat to set up the pre-bend and upper shroud tensions, but can be adjusted when standing. Generally you would tension the shrouds to 12% to 15% of breaking strength, the higher if you are racing. The gauge has notches along one edge for the various size wire diameters that it measures, which correspond to a table on the gauge and in the documentation that comes with it. The instructions are very thorough and it is a first class product. Unfortunately the largest gauge is quite pricy, which has put me off getting one yet.

Large size Loos gauge needed for your H34

Joe, Dan is wright you need the large size Loos gauge. Here are the diameters for my 84: Head stay 9/32; back stay 9/32 splitting down to 2 pieces of 1/4; lower shroud 9/32. Upper and mid-mast shrouds are 1/4. I generally tension to the 46/47 scale on the 9/32 (+/- 1200 lbs) and to 40/41 on the 1/4 (+/- 1000 lbs). Which keeps the shrouds under a certain tension on the leeward side. Good luck
