I was reassembling my surge coupler last night and I noticed that I was able to move the shocks in and out with just my fingers. Are they gas shocks or just resistance type shocks?

Caguy,

I was looking at rebuilding mine last year. After pricing the parts, I found it cheaper to replace the coupler, actuator and all. You can find them on Ebay for around $100 new. I actually bought the whole kit & kaboodle for $351 shipped. That included hubs, rotors, bearings, brake lines, coupler and all the fasteners.

BTW, on a heavier trailer, you'll generally be better off with disc brakes rather than drum brakes. Disc brakes have a bit less stopping power but are far more fade resistant.

I suspect they are better in salt water too. Since they can drain much easier and be rinsed. However, the cost of converting vs the number of miles I'll be traveling doesn't compute.

Just thought I'd mention it. :D
