I am a new owner of an old C22, 1973 to be exact. I don't know what to call these things I am going to ask about, but I will describe them as best I can. There is a shut-off valve under the cabin step that leads to the drain hoses from the sink drain. The valve is broke in that it turns and never stops turning, it doesn't appear to be working. It looks pretty bad and I would want to replace it. My question's are: Is this valve something I can get in a hardware store, Home Depot? #2 To replace this valve, do I have to take the boat out of the water? Can I place a plastic sheet under the hull to keep water from coming up into the boat while I rip the old valve out and try to mount another? I have to replace the wooden fiber board table top, can I make it out of somethinh nicer than the crap Catalina made it out of to begin with? Where is the best place for me to shop for hardware to replace things on the boat. Life lines and the arms that hold them, and a compass to name two. I might need to buy new rope, where can I get a discount on it? Thanks to all that give me any help and advice on working on my C22. Joe I can be E-mailed at massimj@hotmail.com

if youhave two valves, one is on the line from the sink and the is the valve that drains the cockpit. the drain for the cockpit called " scupper through - hull valve " is below the water line if you jump over the side you can jam a cork into the drain hole and change the valve. you will have to use two wrenches on it to keep from stripping the threads out of the hull. catalina direct sells an improved valve for about $ 23.00. the sink valve wont leak when you remove it if you close the scupper through - hull valve. the table top is just a table top, use what you want. for parts call Catalina Direct 1-800-959-7245. or West Marine at www.westmarine.com. you probably should pull it out of the water, if the cork pops out you will sink and you could take a few days to find parts. good luck john

Replace your gate valves with ball valves. These can be purchased at Home Depot. Select the better quality ones like Watts or Nibco (which is what West Marine sells). Put a layer of grease, (or anhydrous lanolin available at a pharmacist) on the handles to keep them from rusting. West Marine sells spare handles because they are made of bare steel. It would be prudent to haul the boat out of the water to replace through hull valves. It can be done in the water as John advised. if you have a good plan AND a back-up plan if things go wrong(do you want to gamble with your new boat?. It is important to use a backup wrench on the thru hull pipe nipple. Because if you don't the thru hull metal pipe nipple will turn in the fiberglass when you try to remove the valve. This is not good because the grip the fiberglass hull has on the pipe nipple will be lost and it will pop up into your hull and cease to keep the ocean from entering your boat. If you don't have a trailer, there are companies that rent trailers to haul out boats. Or maybe you could offer to pay another Cat 22 owner to use his trailer for the short time you will need to change valves. As for the table, I replaced mine with plywood and painted it with several coats of high gloss enamel. It was cheap, easy and the finished effect was pleasing, at least for me. Browse Home Depot for an endless array of ideas on making your table and for stainless steel hardware. All the marine stores have online shopping like this site for example, and www.catalinadirect.com www.westmarine.com www.boatersworld.com (free shipping and no sales tax), www.sailnet.com and the list goes on. Fixing up your boat is really lots of fun but sailing is even more fun!

Thanks for the great replies.

Thanks for the two great replies. I ordered the C22 hanbook/catalog from Catalina direct, and I printed the second bit of help to avoid the pitfalls of a new fix-it-yourself sailor. I will have to wait for warmer weather, it's like winter out there today, must have been down in the 50's today. I had to turn the heat on tonight, it got down to 69 in here.
