Hi, I am considering buying a '70s Catalina 22 for a bargain of $1500. I am wondering if I should spend a few hundred to have a surveyor do a pre-purchase survey, or if that would be "overkill"? Should I take the marina's word for it that there are no hull problems? I really wouldn't know what to look for myself. Thanks. Sherie

Survey

In my opinion getting a survey would be overkill. Very few boats in that price range are surveyed. Also, don't expect a boat in that price range to be perfect. You can tell a lot just by the overall appearance how well it has been maintained. Also, are there extras with it, motor, trailer, docklines, required safety equipment and etc? If your dealing with an established marina I'd put a lot of stock in what they have to say about the hull. $1500 certainly isn't worth damage to their reputation. I'd recommend finding someone with a C22 in your area to check it out with you. C22 folks are everywhere......just post right here and ask for help in your area. Most know their boats well and are very helpful. Good luck, Jon

Don Casey

Find a copy of Don Casey's book: Inspecting The Aging Sailboat. About $15 at a bookstore near you. You can decide if a survey would be overkill but it'll cost about $300. That's overkill for me for a boat at this age and price range. I think there's a Catalina 22 specific website that might also be helpful.

No,

do it yourself. What the worst that can happen. Check the deck for a spongy feel. Check the keel area for problems. Look at the sails. Check that the engine runs good.

Dont use

a surveyor. go to the link and scroll down until you find How to buy a Catalina 22 what to look for. This is a very useful site for anyone owning a C22. Wayne Manske 1978 C22 Nauticat 8511
