My starter and/or solenoid is giving me a lot of problems. Long story.

I want to get a new one installed. My marine mechanic appartently can get one for $1000. I find that a bit hard to believe it is $1000, but anyway...

Any idea on where I can get a new one?

The idea is to have a new one installed and have the old one serviced and keep as a spare.

Thanks.

If a starter is giving you problems there is no sense in keeping it as a spare. Because of the usual better quality of factory components it would be best to have it rebuild rather than replaced by an after-market component. Find an automotive electric motors shop which could do the work. Before doing any work make sure the wiring is up to specs and the connections are clean and tight. If unsure whether it is the starter or the solenoid just replace the solenoid first and check to see if the problem stops or persists. The majority of the problems arise with old wiring with a higher voltage drop. If you push the button and the solenoid does not click it is more than likely the wiring or a tired solenoid. If the push the button and the solenoid clicks every time but the starter does not always engage then the problem is likely in the starter. Worn bearings or brushes are usually maintenance items in a starter and are easy and inexpensive to have replaced.

I took mine to be rebuilt from and starter/alternator rebuild shop, and he sold me a new reputable after market one for $121.00 plus tax. It's not difficult to replace the starter, just the access space is rather small. It pays to do the research on parts..
