Hi all,

"Sandy" arranged for another boat to re-configure the bow rail on my '91 Cat30. Since then, I've been trying to find alternatives to Catalina Direct only because their packing and shipping charges are VERY expensive....especially from California to NY.

There is too much damage for me to attempt a repair since it involves both rail straightening and mount straightening as well as re-finishing.

Does anyone know of a dealer or fabricator on the east coast that might be able to provide the right pulpit for under $1,000 total? I would entertain a used one if it is undamaged.

Thanks for your help.

You might try marinerecycle on yahoo groups. There is a guy in your area that has lots of Sandy salvage parts and posts on that group.
I'll see if I can find his contact info for you.

I bought a bow rail for my C30 from Catalina Direct but it was 15 or so years ago. I'm in NY also. The new rail was $350. I don't remember what the shipping was but I do not recall it being unusually expensive. I do remeber the new rail showed up in a week. I was very pleased with the product. It's still on the boat.

How about a local welder? If you were on the North Fork I would say get an estimate from NF Welding. I think they do that kind of marine fabrication -at least I see that kind of stuff in their yard. They aren't cheap but they may be able to beat the price you cited. There are probably a few hundred places like them between Southold and Sheepshead Bay.
Sorry your boat got crunched - at least it survived.

This is what I did when I kissed a pylon with my C-27. I called Catalina and they had one in stock. So I paid for it along with the very high shipping. I then began to think about it and I called the nice people at Catalina and cancled the order. He said fine but he asked why I cancled J said that I had desided to go through my local dealer Inland Sailing. He said that was great. So I ordered from Inland Sailing. Two weeks it was here. It was strapped to a new catalina sailboat delivery. I did not have to pay any delivery. You might see if you can arrange something like that.

Photo Bug, I worked a similar deal when I ordered all new interior cushions from Catalina via Coney's Marine. Again this was about 18 years ago, but Catalina & Coney's worked out a deal where all my cushions were loaded in a boat destined for delivery at Coney’s. I paid zero shipping. BTY, nice cat!

Thanks, but they now want $665. plus $250 for shipping and $75 packing.

This is why I'm looking elsewhere.

Thanks for the info.......and thanks for the compliment. Sadly, Catalina Direct said there is no way they can get around the packing and shipping charge.

I went to the Catalina Factory, not Catalina direct and I went through a dealer.

Your ally in this is your local dealer, they are guys who want to sell you more Catalina's, and Photobug's description for how bulky factory parts get shipped cross-country is how the business works - pack it in with the next boat delivery.

I'm guessing lots of new Catalina's are headed L.I. way right now! :)

ALWAYS call the factory first ..... Catalina Yachts....... www.catalinayachts.com the phone number is at the bottom of home page. Not CatalinaDirect, that's not the factory, it's a vendor.

I like the dealer idea that the others suggested.

I hate to defend a direct competitor, but bow pulpits and stern rails require crating for shipment, and yes, it is ridiculously expensive!

Thank you for your suggestions and information. I am in contact with Catalina and hope to secure a rail at a reasonable cost.

Thanks again and Happy Sailing........

A bow rail I bought from Catalina direct (CA to NY) was not crated. It was just wrapped with packing paper. It arrived from cross country undamaged. Shipping like everything else has just gone up.. to cover taxes, fuel, (pensions, insurance, medical, etc.) Everything but the actual shipping. The bow rail will still show up wrapped in packing paper..
Ordering thru a dealer sounds like a good avenue to pursue.
