Need a better bilge pump

I need some opinions on bilge pump brands. I have had 4 rule electric pumps go out on me in 2 1/2 years. Yes 4. That makes them less than a year old each. This nearly cost me my boat twice (packing gland went out once, Can't remember the other one.) Both should have been handled by the NEW rule pump. In my humble opinion, rule pumps are not worth much. Is there any other brands available? The boat is a C-30Thanks

David:I wonder if you are having some problem with your float switch or something electrical. I switched over to a self contained one (switch and pump in one unit). I did not like the switch being exposed in the bilge (probably a personal thing). I would try one of the West Marine units and see if you have any better luck. Also check out the fuse and make sure it is of an approipriate size for the pump. Could be too high of an amperage.

Is the problem with your electrical or impellar?

Has your failures been due to electrical or impellar problems? If it is electrical, did you check your switch? I have had probably 20 boats over the past few years and almost all of them had RULE bilge pumps. I have never had one go out. I have had problems with the switches sticking and working sometimes and not others. The proper angle on the switch mounting can make a huge difference. You may also want to check to see if something is clogging your pumps causing them to overheat. The pumps are designed to only run for short periods of time without being covered with water for cooling. You can also install an alarm system on you bilge pump to let you know if you have pump failure. This may help you be aware of a problem before it sinks your boat. To answer some questions

The first pump I had problems with the float switch (rule)the second pump the impeller went badthe third pump again just seemed to quit(after 1 week)the fourth is the self contained unit that cycles

Diaphram Pump

You can move up to a diaphram type pump such as that made by PAR. They're more expensive but are rebuildable and don't burn out when run dry. They mount outside the bilge but still use a bilge-mounted float switch.
