Anchor Light isn't approved.

As I read it, only the one item is approved by the coast guard. That is the buoy marker light. Try & mount that sucker on your mast head - it weighs 16 pounds.

Not legal but

nice to have when on a mooring. No anchor light is needed at this point but I know quite a few folks who leave them on 24/7 even when not on their boat. They suplement with a legal light when at anchor. Tim R.

Nothern "solar" Lights

I could not help putting in a good word for these people. Great product and their facitity is located less than a 1/2 mile from where I am sitting.

Isn't legality based on visibility?

The 501 series light is visible for 1 nm, the 601 for 2 nm. Canadian ColRegs require a masthead light to be visible for 2 miles on a vessel less than 12 metres in length so the 601 could be used. The mooring reference is interesting. It is my understanding that if anchored in a designated anchorage i.e. a mooring field, an anchor light is not required.

Yes - visibility is the legal requirement.

These are fantastic products, but you don't see them recommended as masthead anchor lights. They are designed for specific applications. The 601 is about 5" high x 5" diameter and heavy. Why would you want that on top of your mast? My opinion anyway.

And, in non-flashing mode,

the 601 is not visible at 2nm. It's not intended as an anchor light. The anchor light listed on the page is only visible for 1km--not at all adequate.

I agree, 4 lbs is too heavy for a masthead light

I just wanted to point out that the lack of Coast Guard approval doesn't prevent any light from being used as an anchor light. All it has to do is meet the ColRegs for an anchor light. I did just notice that the 2 nm visibility for the 601 was in steady mode for green light only. Thanks Eric. Any comments on the need for anchor light in a designated anchorage? Cheers David

Anchor lights

The Coast Guard Requirement is to display an all around white light where it may best be seen. There is no requirement that it be mounted at the mast head. Further any good maritime lawyer can demonstrate that a candle is visible at two miles in clear conditions. I use a twelve candle power lantern set six feet above the deck and illuminating my furled sails and standing rigging. I have been questioned but not ticketed.
