My NAVSOUNDER finaly crapped out. The transducer appears to be operating. The display does not function. What option do I have for a repalcement? I am trying to avoid repaceing the thru-hul transducer, i.e., taking her out of the water.

TRANSDUCER

I dont know how old your boat or transducer are but mine can be removed and replaced without taking the boat out. Check and see if yours fits the catagory.

Transducer replacement

Mr. Deutsch is right in that in most cases transducers are designed to be replaced without having to haul the boat. They usually fit inside their own specialized thru-hull so you might want to check that out. Transducers, as a rule, are not necessarily interchangeable between different units and depending upon the age of your now-deceased unit, it's like that technology has changed quite a bit and your existing 'ducer is not compatible with some of the newer units. Some modern units, too, use a transducer that can sound through the hull and don't require a thru-hull access. Some of the Garmin units, I believe, have that capability. You just glue them in place against the hull. You might want to check that out.

Good Luck!

Herman: You can check with the mfg (if they are still in business). They can ususally rebuild the display. If they cannot you are usually screwed. The mfg. do not even seem to have the same transducer between different generations of systems. If you get lucky the thru hull may fit!

Two transducerss

I have two transducers. The first is a Navsounder that came with the boat in 1987. The second is a Apelco 460 fishfinder. In addition to fish and depth it reports speed, log and temp. This display has also crapped out. Any ideas? The transducer is "bullet" shappedat the bottom and will require hauling the boat. Any ideas on replacing the display? I sent Raytheon a note for help. Steve- We are moving Morning Mistress on Dec 30 (I guess without a depth finder). Interested in coming along? We will depart on the low tide at 6:00AM. Current thru straight at 11:18AM will be 2.49 kts (zowie!). Hope to be there by three.

Inside Hull Mount

I had heard oppinions both for and against mounting the transucer on the inside of the hull. When I was unable to remove my old trancducer and could not replace from inside either, my wife came up with an idea that worked. We filled a plastic bag with water and with the new transducer inside the bag and hooked up - held the trancducer in several potential mounting spots. We found a spot (only one of several trys) that gave us a correct depth reading. We knew the reading was correct because we knew the depth at the dock. Then we marked the spot and mounted a PVC with a cap on the top to the hull. Drilled a hole in the cap, ran the cable through, sealed the cable hole, filled the PVC with mineral oil, screwed the trancducer and cap into the PVC. This set up has worked great for going on six years.

Follow up to Depth SOunder

Rec'd a notice from Hunter. The Navsounder was installed by the dealer. They tried to locate Stowe in their purchasing manuals but did have any luck. I did a web search and discovered Simrad bought Stowe 10 years ago. Simrad directed me to a model that may work. I will check it out at a local dealer this week. PS- Hunter is the best. I called regarding a holding tank replacement. Three days later they called with and said they found a drawing the manufacturer was out of bus but would I like the drawing faxed to me. Zowie- now that customer service - 14 year old boat and they spent the time to research something they couldn't even sell me. This will weigh heavely on choosing my next vessel.
