I am thinking about replacing the depth "finder" on my 1985 Hunter 25.5... I am not even sure of the brand I have now it's one of the round ones that are mounted next to the companionway. Anyway I was thinking of getting a Navman Multi 3100. I was wondering if anyone knew if it uses two transducers? 1 for speed and 1 for depth? I think I only have one thru-hull for my current depth finder. I see the Navman electronics on a lot of boats in magazines... are they good? Also if I do install the Navman is there a way to plug the hole left by the old depth finder? Thanks, Jeremy

Transducer installation

Two transducers will need to be installed, one for speed/temperature and one for depth. If the Navman transducers are larger in diameter than the existing transducer, you will be able to recycle the whole by enlarging it with a drill (hole saw), otherwise, let the transducer in and cut two new holes. To get the old transducer out, remove the nut on the inside of the hull and with a block of wood and hammer tap it from inside the boat out of the hull. Install the new transducers with LifeCaulk. Let the caulk cure before you snug up the transducer and clean up the excess. Unlike Raymarine ST-60, Navman does not have self closing through-puts.

Fishfinder 4150

I installed a Navman 4150 fishfinder on my Beneteau 440 last year. It too has two transducers. I believe it is very similr to the unit described. It has provided significant performance improvement over the replaced separate devices. I now have an extra display head hole in the binacle that I plan to fill in this season with a wooden block that will provide an excellent mopunting platform for my GPS. The only problem I am experiencing is the erratic readings from the depth transducer when the boat is making speed. I gather this is due to the tendancy to collect air bubbles around the transducer. The only way to get rid of it is to slow down!. In shallow water where speeds tend to be slower the depth sounder works just fine

Thumbs up on Navman

Bought my new used O'Day 302 in the summer of 04 and it had no depth or knot meter. I bought a Navman (don't remember the model number but it's just a speed/depth model) and have been happy with it. The numbers are large enough to read (although when viewed from a side angle, they don't show up as well) and the performance overall has been good. I debated whether to put the two transducers in myself...finally chickened out because couldn't bring myself to bore two holes in a boat I'd just purchased! But, after seeing the final installation -- I'd tackle it myself next time. Good luck.
