I'll be taking the Basic Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Chartering courses in a few weeks and wanted to also read a basic coastal navigation text prior to the class. I was thinking either US Sailings's Coastal Navigation or The Annapolis Book Of Seamanship. Any recommendations or other suggestions? Thanks.

I am very fond of

"The Practical Pilot" by Leonard Eyges published by International Marine

I find the ones you mention too theoretical for my learning style. David

Piloting and Dead Reckoning

I took the ASA course in 98 at Modern Sailing Academy. Their correspondence course this book which is authored by Shufeldt. I recommend this book. Good luck.

Algebra and Chart No. 1

I have never taken the Basic Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Chartering courses, but i do have a 100 Ton Masters License. Charting, plotting and navigation doesnt change just because a course has a different name. If you know very basic algebra i.e. distance = rate X time and right angle triangle formula A squared + B squared = C squared, the rest is a piece of cake. For most that dont know this , they usually have a "slide rule" that i found more complicated. I have been to 'sea school', so i know the drill. Also, the link i added will also help. It is Nautical Chart 1, and has explanations of symbols as well as other useful information. The other books recommended here are also good. It depends on how much time you have to read. Good luck and enjoy

Cruising Courses

Eric We took both of those ASA courses in 2002. About 1 month prior to the course the instructor sent us the two couse books and asked us to read them ahead of time. The books were Sailing Fundamentals (Gary Johnson) and Cruising Fundamentals ( Harry Munns). Both were excellent and we keep them onboard today as reference books. Good Luck with the classes.

The one and only...

Boat Navigation For The Rest Of Us I'm with David on this. I don't want to read through a ton of theory to find a simple answer. Cheers, Bob
