So I receive this official looking letter from the NDP warning me my vessel documentation will soon expire. Of course, we sold Maxine in 2021 and transferred the documentation to her new owner. I spent an hour investigating the NDP and found that it has nothing to do with the Coast Guard Documentation Center. Interestingly the return address is in Delaware, lending an air of reality. However the letter to me was postmarked in Santa Anna CA. I think this entity renews documentations for a fee.
So just a heads guys and gals......

This scam has been occurring for a few years. Official looking return address on envelope, and seal on letterhead. They actually do process the renewal through the coast guard; however, it is a five year renewal at a considerably higher fee as compared to the Coast Guard. The real Coast Guard national documentation center is in Falling Waters, WV. I renewed mine a couple weeks ago. You can now renew for one, two, three, four, or five years at $26 per year.

The scammers are very convincing in their presentation, I've had a few friends fall for the scam. It's ironic that when I first got my boat documented in 2006 the renewal costs were $0 and the service allowed me to review the info for my vessel and ownership. Now the renewal cost is $26 and I don't have access to my data for review. I find it interesting that the scammers seem to have access to vessel documentation data, but an owner does not. Seems a bit shady to me.

I don't remember how to do it, but you can look up any documented boats information. So as an owner you can, but I just don't remember how...

I believe this is the official USCG link for name search. I found my boat on this link.

HIN numbers were only used after 1972 (I think) in the US, and years later in other countries. So if you have an older than 1972 boat, or a boat made in a foreign country prior to the HIN being implemented in that country, you can easily have a documented boat without a HIN.
