I replaced the batteries on my 2001 Hunter 410 the other day. As part of this I replaced the battery base shelf for the port side battery box and I decided to get rid of the stardboard battery box and to install hold hold rods instead.
Pulling up the starboard base shelf I was surprised by the most nasty looking water I had even seen in the bilge under it!!!!!! While that bilge drains into the main bilge sump the drain hole is an inch of so off the bottom so it never drains. It was like a lab experiment of NASTY!!! I know I had never cleaned under there and bet the first owner also never did. Have I said yet how NASTY it was?? I bet the there was 1"of scum black mold stuff in it. I washed and cleaned it out and wet vacuumed it all out. But of course it will just refill and the only way to get to it is to remove the battery and pull the shelf base out. So since the new battery was shorter I drilled a 2" hole into the battery support base that will allow me to flush and vac it once in a while. I can at least drop a pan treatment tablet in it now once in a while it kill the creatures growing in it.
Just thought I would past along to other 410 owners who have never thought to look into this nasty void.
