The Westerly Harbor Commission in Westerly, Rhode Island, is once again considering placing restrictions on the number of boats that can anchor inside of Napatree Point, off Watch Hill. The restrictions could require the use of designated guest moorings in a defined and strictly enforced anchorage area, as well as limitations on rafting.

The boating public is urged to attend the Harbor Commission’s next meeting at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, April 12, at the Westerly Police Headquarters Conference Room at 60 Airport Road, Westerly.

Well, looks like I wont be visiting Westerly, RI in the near term future. Betcha, this is all about putting out moorings for 'revenue income purposes'.

Isnt the RI government 'run' by the Mafioso?

...as well as limitations on rafting.
At Angel Island here on SF Bay they had great moorings for years and years. Then they went ahead and "improved" them. First they snafued up the moorings by tying floating lines underneath them, which caught altogether too many skipper's props. Then they found they'd put them in the wrong orientation so that folks hung out sideways to the incoming waves. Then they "fixed" them by correcting the location, and added "only two boats per mooring" signs to them! We used to have literally hundreds of boats show up for our yearly Catalina Rendezvous, but no more.

They would have been better off just leaving what was there.

Oh, has gone up from $7 to $25 or more these days.

Lovely bastards.

I mentioned on the Florida anchoring post recently: The $ and possibler liability they spend on putting in moorings is never offset by revenue. Why bother?

False alarm I believe - further report I have states:

A phone call from a Westerly Harbor Commissioner this morning clarified the issues. The Commission is not contemplating curtailing any beach or anchorage access other than the usual areas due to eel grass growth in shallow waters or Piping Plover beach nesting as required by Rhode Island Fish & Wildlife. Not anchoring within any of the narrow fairways is also important to remember.

The subject apparently was mentioned in a news article by a writer a few weeks ago but never made it to the Commission's agenda, nor do they plan on discussing it in the future.

CT Marine Trades sent out an email too.

Wouldn't access to that area be controlled by the corps of engineers and not the town of Westerly? Little Narragansett bay sits right on the border of CT. and RI so either one trying to claim rights to the open area outside the basin that includes the yacht club moorings would probably start a war between the states.
