hello all

my fiance' named my Mac25.. she named it Xing Fu (pronounced - Sing Foo ).. i have gotten the letters to apply to my boat now... what i am asking is, where is the name placed on the boat.... in the old days the nam was on the transom, and on each side of the bow... but now days it is on the side, the transom, the bow, side of the cockpit area, and other places

it can be confusing sometimes seeing how everyone places the names anyplace they want it...

i kind of like the old ways.... name on the transom and each side of the bow....

sincerely

dont know for sure, but i think when the sugar scoop transom became popular the rear side names were used. obvious reason. below is from uncle sam for documented vessels;

The name and hailing port of a recreational vessel must be marked together on some clearly visible exterior part of the hull. The vessel name of a commercial vessel must also be marked on the port and starboard bow and the vessel name and the hailing port must also be marked on the stern. All markings may be made by any means and materials that result in durable markings and must be at least four inches in height, made in clearly legible letters of the Latin alphabet or Arabic or Roman numerals. The "hailing port" must include both a place and a State, Territory, or possession of in the United States. The state may be abbreviated.

ps, smart move by allowing the fairer person to name the ship, you'll have many happy years ahead of you!

If you suffer from OCD as I do, you can take a pic of your boat and then, using known dimensions of the boat, create your own decals using using your computer. With this, you can figure the exact dimensions and location for your name decals as shown. In this photo, I erased the old name and then typed and inserted a new name on the boat. The photo of the boat is real, the name is not. All done with Microsoft paint.

If you don't have a computer font which you like, there are at least a gazzillioin fonts, free for downloading on the net.

A good vinyl lettering shop can do both sides and a small one for the rear, all in deep shadow, for about $150.00. They will use the font you downloaded from the net.

hello all

thanks duality on the governments documentation of the law... i appreciate that...

i have my vinyl letters already made... i will place the name on each side of the bow, under the state id numbers.... and also on the transom, i will place the name and home port of my boat along with an outline of the state of indina... i knew i would put the name on the transom, but on the side of the boat i was unsure... there are so many variations and locations on where poeple have place the name, it can be very confussing..

i greatly appreciate the help on where to put the lettering for the name of my boat... i have 5 inch tall letters for the transom, and 3 inch high letters for each side of the bow.. i saw in the government descrition that all markings must be 4 inches tall... looks like i will have to go get more lettering done,, i will need the bow letters to be 4 inches tall.... not 3 inches tall, as i already purchased... i will post pictures when i get the lettering put on my boat..

thank again
Jess

Seems to me, specific location and letter size is for boats that are documented. Pleasure boats only have registration number requirements but I would verify that.

CORRECT!...
documented vessels have requirements for all lettering.... registered boats do not.
But registration numbers have to be no less than 3 inches tall.....minimum requirements.

as for the size of the lettering for the name, if you dont make it sizable enough to be seen from a reasonable distance on the water, whats the point? unless you only care if people know the name of it when its at the dock....

8-10" tall is about right for a boat that size.... and sometimes due to the font, it can still be hard to read at a couple hundred feet away....

my basic lettering is 8" tall with the capitol A being taller...

and you have a 25ft boat so there is really no need to have the registration numbers and the name fighting for the same real estate at the very front of the boat....:D

Same as Piotr. ON each side of the hull between stern and cabin. When the movie the Poseidon Adventure came out my buddy had already name his boat Poseidon. So, when he got around to putting name on it he put Poseidon on the stern upside down:dance:

Me too. I considered having the name on the transom, but didn't think it would look good with the outboard there. I haven't bothered with home port, and I am quite happy with Ilya's name on the hull.

Here is what I did. I addded a photo of the official naming ceremony. Last year on the July 4th. On the beach in front of the house we rented on Sagamore Beach, Cape Cod. Yes official with toasting to the Gods and adding the name to Poisedon's the ledger of the deep. Classic...lots of champagne. The wind picked up and we sailed off the anchor.
