Is it necessary to name a boat. I am about to put my C22 in the water and have not decided on a name. Is it a legal requirement to have a name on a boat?

Not a Requirement -- But Part of the Fun

It's not a requirement to name a boat that's going to be titled/registered under the laws of a state (I'm not sure about the requirement if a vessel is going to be documented with the Coast Guard vs. state registered, but that won't apply at your LOA). But it is part of the fun of sailing. You don't have to name the boat the first time it goes in the water if you're not ready. I have friends who've gone for considerable periods of time before naming their boats, partly because they think they have to get to know the boat's character to "learn" what its name "already" is -- kind of a nice thought. When, and if, the time comes, you can have the traditional naming ceremony, to include libations for the boat, Neptune, and you. In the meantime, enjoy! Consider what it sounds like on the Radio

Mark: In addition to what the other 2 responses said, you might want to consider what the name that you pick sounds like on the VHF radio. We never cruised much with other boats until this summer, but this summer, we did hear our name over the VHF lot, and it sounded nice to us. When one boat calls another boat, the name is repeated 3 times. If the name is a tongue twister, it might not be easy for someone else to repeat, or repeat without laughing. Also, if you are cruising, and call ahead to a marina, they will ask you the name of your boat, and prepare for your arrival based on the name. It would be awkward not to have a name for the boat. In that vein...

Just heard about a boat whose name is "Pay Day." Say that three times
