I don't mean a rowboat that you carry on your boat, but a very small primary boat. I am counting down to the day I can find out if I won the auction on a 14' sailing dinghy. This would be "my boat." I'm not sure if I will name it, but I wonder if it would be lame to do so. I don't really care if it is. If I decide to do something I just do it.

Mark my words, parachute pants will come back, and I will be ready!

Are people naming these lil boats or is there some social construct amongst boaters about where a boat starts to rate a name? Do you christen it with hotel minibar champagne? :D

any and everything in this universe is worthy of a name--is whether or not folks bother to do the naming is how stuff gets named.......

I don't think "Dumb" would be a good name but why not name it? We named ours the Lubberdink-even paid a paint shop to do it professionally. Now we've upgraded to our Oday 20 and wife painted the new name on the stern-Lubberdink Twee (dutch for "two"). Whaddathey gonna do, throw us off the lake?

Read the Pogo cartoons. The little swamp boat had a different name on each of the four sides. My dink is ATF for Anything That Floats.

Most boats will tell you their names if you listen, and yes, even small ones. One thing I've noticed: maybe it's me, but inflatables just don't seem to have the "soul" of wooden or even FG boats. My new 9ft rowing dinghy is called "Julie", which is short for "La Jolie Bateau" (Yes, LA! Boats are feminine!). My Lady's mouseboat is called Miss Lilly Pad. But none of my inflatables ever had a name.

I know what you mean. All of my cars have names. "Igor" will be towing the boat if I manage to get it. I thought since it was previously a rental boat, a nod to it's past as a boat of ill repute would be a fun inside joke. I would like to see how she handles though, that may reveal a character that demands a specific name.

I named all my racing dinghies "topside down" (transom was not very big)painted on upside down for obvious reasons;)

It's yours...... name it. Who cares what anyone thinks.... but if you do, most think it's cool. A buddy of mine kept his little 12 footer on the sand in front of his apartment in Mission Beach years ago. He named it "my wet dream"! Lots of giggles from passersby... but never any complaints.

I'll tell you this, though..... if you have cute name... learn to sail it well asap. And keep it in good shape. Take pride in it and let people see you roll tacking and roll jibing the little dude and when it comes time to sell it you'll get top dollar... cause people will project themselves doing the same thing you're doing.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
I had a Force 5 and I named it "Deadly Force" since I am in law enforcement. Sounded like a tough racing name too! LOL

I pull an 8 foot fiberglass dinghy behind the "Spirit of Liberty" and the dinghy is named "Justice." That way I have Liberty and Justice!

Any boat someone values can have a name. Our little 6-foot inflatable that gets unrolled about once every 5 yrs even has a name. Go for it.

The dinghy for ''Whisper'' was going to be ''Shout''. Thank goodness I never got around to it since I'm keeping the dink when I sell the boat.

You must name it; it just makes your possession so much more valuable! I’d once named my boat Celesta…for all the times I would lie in it and gaze the sky at night.

My Newfie friend had a 12ft aluminum fishing dinghy he called HopeItFloats (usually in the back of his truck, the HopeItRuns...). Far Cove's tender was Near Cove.

Yup, everything has a name...

These are some hysterical names. I have some inexplicable desire to name a boat "cookie monster." I have no idea why other than I like the character, I like cookies, and we display similar eating techniques; nom de food.
I want to save that for a bigger boat, though. That, and my leather pirate hat. Oh, it's going to happen.
