cracks in gelcoat
First where are the cracks? Are they stress cracks where the boat flexes or are the random thru out the boats decks and or hull?If they are rendom thru out the hull and decks its more than likely they are from lack of proper maintance to the gel coat over the years. If this is the case what you need to do is sand the gel coat down till you can no longer feel the cracks and shoot more gelcoat on the boat you will notice that you can still see the cracks , now resand the boat with 80 grit paper again and reshoot the boat again this time go ahead and get a good flow coat on the boat and don't worry if you get some runs there easy to sand out and polish, when i reshoot a boat with gelcoat i mix the gelcoat with Duratech Hi Gloss Addtive its a 50/50 mix so for every gallon of gelcoat you mixin 1 gal. of the Duratech and this gives you a hi gloss when your done spraying, you can inprove this finish even more by wet sanding the sprayed areas with 400 to 2500 sand paper, very inportant not to skip any grades inbetween and this will give you a finished product that looks like it was just popped out of the mold after you buff the sprayed areas , any questions can be emailed to me and i have a cd of past boats that i've regelcoated.
