Mystery in the bilge (pump)

I recently fitted a new automatic bilge pump to my Catalina 309; a Rule-Mate 1100. All went well for the installation and pump worked well.
However, soon noticed the pump failing to turn off; but by switching to off then back to auto it stayed off and seemed to come on again when needed.

Yesterday decided to look more closely. I cleaned the bilge so thoroughly you could eat dinner off it and washed out the bilge pump. Using a hose I tested the pump and while at first spluttering a bit - perhaps due to soap - it was working well and switching off automatically as expected. I tested it on and off for about 5 cycles to rise out the whole bilge. Then refitted all.

Now the mystery.
Today when I returned and the pump was running again having failed to switch off. I thought I must just have a faulty pump and would replace it. But before i cleaned it all again - using the freshwater hose. AND magic - it turned off automatically every time. In fact it did this 3 or 4 more times.

I then pumped out and tested it with a bucket of clean saltwater. It failed to turn off!

It seems to me (I have yet to pull bilge pump to bits as it is all sealed) that there is an electrical switch inside the pump that makes contact when water covers it. However, as salt water is more conductive it seems that a very small amount keeps the connection active and so the pump does not respond and switch off.

Has anybody else experienced this problem?
I have written to Rule Inc the manufacturer of the pump but am yet to hear back.

I had a Rule that had "smart technology"-dumb- that worked by randomly running and would shut off if no water resistance was felt but would continue to run and then turn on again in a shorter time period if water resistance was felt. The dumb thing would run while the boat sat on the trailer with the drain plug out. Since I could not tell if it was running for true leak or just to test for water I replaced it.
Sounds like you may have a similar problem.

pump suggestions

Yes certainly looks like it has to be replaced. I am wondering what with. Are there other makes of auto bilge pumps that are more reliable. Any recommendations?

Skip the auto bilge pump. Install a pump with a separate float switch. Float switches fail often but pumps rarely do.

I agree, a separate float switch works better. Don't bother with the automatic. I tried one once on my sailboat based on good experience with my ski boat. If I had a little water in the bilge, say from the ice box drain, the auto would switch on and off when sailing (boat heeling). It also stayed on a few times draining my battery when the bilge was virtually dry. I switched it out after less than half a season of use. The separate float switch, oriented the right way, has never caused a problem .... ever.

I have replaced THAT pump three times under warranty due to the stuck ON issue with the built in switch

I have NO ROOM in that area for a float :)

I replaced it with a Johnson Ultima this season and so far so good

I, too, don't trust mechanical float switches. The one on my boat was working OK but last week I decided to replace it with one of these: http://waterwitchinc.com/new/SiteElements/Pages/ProductPages/101product.html

Installation was a piece of cake and it seems to work just fine. The other thing that is nice is that it takes up almost no room in the bilge, so it's great for installs where space is tight.

While I was at it I also added their bilge pump cycle counter to my electrical panel: http://waterwitchinc.com/new/SiteElements/Pages/ProductPages/BC100product.html

Very slick.
