Mysterious tapping sound revisited

Remember the knocking sound on my Hunter 33.5? Well, it looks like the motor mounts are the culprits. The Yanmar tech pointed out the different heights on apposing corners, as well as the rubber starting to disintegrate. The boat is 17 years old, and he suggested changing all four, even though all four are not quite finished with their life. It's kind of like pay me now or pay me later. The hard part is the mounts are about $100 each. Yikes! With the engine running and in gear at the dock, he pulled up on the stuffing box and the knocking went away. An engine alignment after changing the mounts should do the trick. On the matter of loosing oil, he found a few small leaks on the engine, such as the gasket on the fuel pump, O-rings on the head cover screws, and maybe even the gasket on the head cover. He also pointed out hoses that should be changed out if I felt I could do it myself. The water heater hoses are chaffing as well as the exhaust hose between engine and muffler. I'll report back after items are changed with the end results. Keeping my fingers crossed.

You might try these people

It seems to me some one else here used them and the prices were better

Deja Vu!!

My '87 Legend 35 is/was doing almost everything you have just mentioned. Re Tapping: I found that my tapping (as is your) was due to old mount that had sagged. This left the shaft much closer to the bottom of the shaft log. And thus, when the engine was a lower speed (where it vibrates more), the shaft tapped on the bottom of the shaft log. Sometimes after just starting and before all cylinders are firing smoothly, the tapping can be quite significant. I have NOT replaced my mounts this year (will over winter), but instead raised the whole engine so that the shaft was properly centered in the shaft log, and then I realigned. The tapping is now gone except when I turn a sharp corner under power. That is likely due to the mounts as well as the motor leans. I've also had fuel pump leaks, and had to replace the exhaust hose. My other hoses do show some where, but it's not that significant. I've found all wear spot on all the hoses, and wrapped a ~1" long length of other hose (split and gooped on with silicone) as chafe guards. Mounts are expensive, and I've done some investigation on non-Yanmar mounts. Some people recommend them, and other say to keep with the Yanmar ones. Chris

Polyflex

I had looked into Ployflex mounts from Australia. I have the literature for them is anyone is interested. They were quoted to me at ~$125 CDN each. Chris
