Mysterious Hole Under Bow Eye

Hello shipmates. As I am slowly refurbishing my 1987 Catalina 22 (hull # 14481) I just noticed this hole under the bow eye.

I inserted a small file to see how deep it was and it comes out into the chain locker.

Right under this masterful fiberglass work (I assume covering the nuts securing the bow eye).

Is this supposed to be there, maybe as a chain locker drain (or a way to slowly sink the boat)? Obviously I need to repair the poor fiberglass work above it so wondering if I should fiberglass over the hole as well. Will need a repair on the exterior bow as well I guess?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Weird, my 88 doesn't have that. The anchor locker drains to port for me but I don't see that drain on yours so they must have done it straight out the bow.

Thank you MorbidFollower. Does your look like mine (just a hole) even though in a different spot?

That's the factory anchor locker drain on the later C22 "New Design" models.

The tube is known to leak on some boats.

If it does, some people choose the better option to simply fill it in with epoxy and put in a new one out the side of the hull.

Here's a link to what @Gene Neill did... Better, bigger and less prone to clogging than the tiny OEM tube

Looks like you pretty much got your answer: a poorly designed locker drain. The tube that goes between the locker and the prow is the problem, it's a Jerry rig. It probably will leak into the hull, sooner or later. Not to mention it's too small in diameter to function reliably.

Side note, I'm curious! Your boat is an 87, and your hull number is 14481? I have an '88, hull #14383. Seems like your boat should be an 88 or an 89! @morbidfollower, you have an 88, what's your hull number?

That's a nice upgrade!

Now I'm curious. I was told it is a 1987 but will do some research. The manufacturer plate is impossible to read and even the embossed hull number is difficult to read.

coldaddy:

If you have a solid fiberglass forehatch, your boat is an '87 or earlier. If, you have a smoked Lexan forehatch, your boat is an 1988. My '88 NewDesign's sail number is 14776 which is just a few boats older than morbidfollower's boat. I too have a thru hull locker drain at the same locations as on morbidfollower's picture. Your boat was possibly made just before the thru hull became standard equipment for the anchor locker.

I assumed my anchor locker drain was factory as I'm the 3rd owner and both of the original 2 owners did zero modifications to it before I got it. Glad to hear that yours is the same. I suspect coldaddy that your sail number might be lower than what is posted. I can't read your hull number either lol, it does kinda look like 14491 tho like you mentioned. Is that the number on your main sail?

Hull Identifier: CTYH4491J788

ChatGPT gave me this info on that identifier:
  • CTY = Manufacturer ID → Catalina Yachts.
  • H4491 = Catalina’s serial for this hull (your boat’s unique production number).
  • J = Build month code → October (A=Jan … L=Dec).
  • 7 = Year of certification → 1987.
  • 88 = Model year 1988 (common for boats built late ’87).
So: Catalina 22, built Oct 1987, model year 1988, serial H4491.
