Mysterious Broken Snap Ring

My wife and I had our 1983 Hunter 30 out for a great sail this past Saturday. After about 3 hours of sailing in 12 to 15 knot winds, as we tacked to run up the Thames to our mooring, we were surprised by the sound of something metal striking the floor of the cockpit, at the stern, on the starboard side. It turned out to be a piece of a broken snap ring, probably a little more than half of the ring. Approximately two minutes later, while we were trying to figure out where it came from, we heard that same sound again. Another piece of a snap ring was found, this time on the port side, right next to the pedestal. From placing the two pieces together, it's apparent that there's a third piece that's missing. As near as I can estimate, it would appear to be an external snap ring with approximately a 1 inch diameter. On the other hand, I'm a real beginner, so it could be an internal ring. The problem is that I haven't been able to locate where it came from. The greatest concern, of course, is that it's a critical part of the rigging, but right now, I'd appreciate any suggestions on where snap rings of this size might be used on a '83 Hunter 30. Thanks in advance.

Behind the wheel

Vinny, On my 310 there is a 1" external snap ring on the wheel shaft, just forward of the wheel hub. It keeps the wheel from contacting the pedestal as the retaining nut is tightened. Sounds to me like this is what has failed.

Flat snap-ring?

I think Clayton is right, it is probably the wheel stop. My old Edson(1979) has that same arrangement. The other place that snap rings are sometimes used is on top of the winch, to hold the cover on. My Lewmars are NOT like that but I bought one on E-Bay that does have a snap-ring. Unlikely that one would pop out in pieces like that. You can probably find that ring on the "Related Link" below.

Yes, it's a flat snap ring

Thanks to both Ed and Clayton. I needed to be pointed at something, and it sounds like you've provided that for me.
