I wonder if anyone else has this problem if indeed it is a problem?? At the weekend I was looking for some gear and pulled a few bits and pieces out of the locker under the portside seats inside the cabin. This revealed a crack that runs almost the lenght of the compartment. It appears to be the join between the ballast tank and the floor in the locker,. There is a sort of a ridge that runs the length of the locker and thats where the crack is. Any advice appreciated.

Ballast tank ridge

Without seeing the "crack" it's hard to guess if you actually have an area where the top of the tank has split away from the hull. I would have your local Hunter dealer or a good surveyer, come inspect it. Is the ballast tank full and does it leak into the locker when the boat is loaded? There are pictures in the photo archive that show the tank top being applied to a hull. Brigg

Hey thats it Brigg

Thanks for the photo. That far left hand edge of the tank top, where it sort off curves downwards, is the bit that you see when you look inside the locker under the seats. Well the crack is exactly along that edge and runs almost the length of the locker. Where the edge meets or joins the floor in the locker. But Brigg there never never appears to be any water in the locker. Perhaps it would be a good idea to get this repaired ASAP just in case the whole tank top seperates. I guess I should get onto Hunter for the yacht is only a few years old.

Something else Brigg

I just noticed in the photo showing the top of the tank. It appears that the companion way step (where the vent plug is and the thumb screw for the valve are located) is higher than the tank obviously so that any air in the tank is exhausted when the tank fills so that there is no chance of water sloshing around in the tank. But I have noticed that there are a few other areas where air can be trapped by the water, for example where the mast step is and to the left and right of the tank are areas that appear to be higher than the general mass of the top of the tank. Surely these areas should have venting to allow them to be totally filled when the water rushes in. What are your thoughts.

Post a picture on the web

I've seen other cracks around the ballast tank area. We've had 3 260's repaird up here and so I'm quite familiar with some of the weaknesses. Jeff Peltier
