My windlass is not working properly

Is not working when I use up but working when I use on the down way

Is there a separate fuse or breaker that I need to check, by what I need to start my investigation, or is the time to change it?
Or just changing the motor

My windlass is SL written on the top and it was install on my new purchase of Hunter 336 1994 so I tried to save $$ but I like to have windlass because I'm sailing for cruse with my wife every weekend and she's the one who are manage the anchor

SL is for Simpson Lawrence and that brand was used by Hunter on many boats.
You might try getting a manual for your model. I found one on line for the one my 38 came with and it had helpful information.

I believe SL was taken over by Lewmar

Had that same thought. If motor works on down then it would seem to be OK. It it had failed it probably wouldn't work in either direction.

Switch or possibly a solenoid (I can't recall right off hand if there is one) or even a bad connection on the wires for the up switch.

Explain more on setup and does it have 2 buttons at the windlass one up and one down and maybe the up button is bad or bad connection.
Look under the windlass at the wiring and check wiring for each button.

I have a remote control wired to the windlass with a cord like an old phone (not an iPhone)
May I should check the remote or the connection wire
But like he said previous reply : if is working down it should be working up...

Find the solenoid and understand completely how it supposed to work.
separate subject, but what's with having your wife at the anchor? I'm sure she can steer... While YOU do all the work!

It's a Canadian thing which has served us well for years .

The best way to trouble shoot is to have access to the motor and exchange the up with down wire and see if when you press down - does it go up. That eliminates the most expensive part - the motor. Then exchange the wires on the solenoid the same way. You will find its answer very quickly. A voltmeter can also give you the test result without having to disconnect anything. You may need a second person to press the remote button while you measure the voltages.40

Sounds like the up solenoid contacts are burnt. Down takes almost no current while up takes a lot..... so the up contacts tend to go first. If you can get access to the inards you can simply clean them with a file and they should be fine.
