I told my wife that according to I guess old sea legend, that it is bad luck to have a woman aboard a boat, unless she is unclothed, shall we say! She said that if it was true, a man must have thought it up! Where can I find a book to show her that I didnt pull it out of thin air! thanks

There's a little paperback...

... called "When a Loose Cannon Flogs a Dead Horse There's the Devil to Pay" subtitled "Seafaring Words in Everyday Speech" by Olivia A. Isil, International Marine (McGraw Hill), 1996, (ISBN 0-07-032877-3). I quote from page 114: "Women were considered to bring bad luck at sea and it was widely believed that the sea gods grew angry at the very sight of them on board ships. However the superstition did not preclude the wives of British seamen from once living aboard ships with their husbands, and occasionally, in the merchant service wives accompanied their ship captain husbands to sea. Paradoxically, mariners believed a naked woman before the ship had the power to calm gales and high winds. For this reason, many a ship's figurehead depicted a woman with one bare breast..." On the same page the author also discusses why ships are always called "she", and then makes the following statement: "One source suggests that a ship "was nearer and dearer to the sailor than any one except his mother". What better reason to call a ship "she"?" That's a damned good question! Now, my wife doesn't believe me either. But that's another story... Maybe we should form a support group?

It's True !

Ask you wife why all the figure heads on the old sailing ship are figures of good looking full breasted ladies !It was to please the sea gods !Don't mess with years and years of tradition! ! !

Arrr ye scum or the sea

I also think there was something in the saying about the captain being the lord and master and that everyone had to do as they said, no questions asked. Of course there were mutinies and people died too. Nasty business to say the least. My wife would keel haul me as would most of yours. We may as well give up our fantasies and look for gold elsewhere Arrr

We sail in San Francisco Bay and sometimes even outside the bay. My wife considers three layers the equivalent of naked. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije II)

I bet they'd clear a path for you at the fuel dock, but you'd never hear the end of it if she got a splinter on the piling.

Dennis, Try the British Virgins. We were sailing into Jost Van Dyke one afternoon and the girls were all wearing one piece suits (if you get what I mean). We noticed off in the distance that one of the already anchored boats had some kids on it, so we told the women they should probably cover up before we got in close. As we got closer, we then noticed that all the women on that boat were also wearing the one piece suit. Naked sailing and naked anchoring. Take her somewhere warm and hope for the best. Pirates Cove!!!!!

Okay, I'm your average almost uptight white guy, but a trip to Pirates Cove set my mind straight. This is a weird little spot just south of a well-known area where clothing is considered arrogant. The beach there is simply spectacular, even by California standards, and everybody gets into the spirit of the occasion by running around native style. (hey, I was born here, so doesn't that make me a 'native'?)Anyhow, it was really fun to watch previously 'nudity impaired' persons run around and act like little kids. It is a very liberating experience for many, but for some it's just another day in paradise, take it or leave it as you wish. As to nude women aboard a boat, I can only relate that all of my experiences in that particular area have been quite positive. The only problem I've seen for the aforementioned activity was when I watched a skiboat hit the shore damn near square-on at 30+ mph while the pilot of said boat was checking-out 3 very pretty young ladies on a partybarge across from the marina. But, that's another story!

Janet Jackson and other thoughts...

The quote in my post at the bottom of the thread - "many a ship's figurehead depicted a woman with one bare breast..." - made me think that here is a perfect career opportunity for Janet Jackson. She may be able to use Justin Timberlake as a support staff. And then the quote refers to placing a naked woman "before" the ship. Hell, when I wore a younger man's clothes (to quote Billy Joel), a good weekend involved a naked women before the ship, during the ship, and after the ship! "Those were the days, my friend, we thought they'd never end..." It's like the words of the old adage: When young: tri-weekly :) In middle age: try weekly  At my age: try weakly :{ Did I mention that my wife doesn't believe me? ;D
