My 87 Hunter 40 has a Norcold refer model 60Hz SCQT-6406 that seem to have died. The boat came from the Gulf and the unit is solid rust. It probably has a freon leak. I'm wondering if the unit if worth salvaging or should I replace it? A new unit would not use R-12 freon, a big advantage. If I do replace it is the cold plate still usable? (I am not talking about the "bar refer" at counter level but am referring to the 7 cubic foot cooler build in the counter.) Thanks for your reply.

I understand that the Norcold is a sealed system and won't leak freon. Therefore, it doesn't need to be recharged.

Repair or replace old Norcold

Answer: Norcold Refrigeration units that fail after fifteen years are not worth repairing. If you want to explore this further contact Boatelectric as they recondition these refrigerators. I rate boat refrigeration companies in my 12 volt book and the Boatelectric company is rated Excellent.
